E6540 - "this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah"

Whenever I connect a usb 3.0 device to a port in my E6540 I get the infamous notification:"this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah".

My laptop has 16 GB ram. CPU is i7-4800MQ. Win 7 64.

In order to spare useless suggestions, please note that...

1. My bios is up to date

2. All system drivers are up to date (Dell & Intel latest versions)

3. All usb cables are OK. That notification appears with every device I connect - external HD's & flash drives.

4. All external devices are USB 3.0. Please don't ask me to recheck it.

5. All usb ports on this laptop are blue and Dell swears they are USB 3.0.

6. USB  3.0 controller in bios setup is enabled.

7. Yeah - I've already uninstalled all usb devices in Windows Device Manager & let the OS reinstall them.

8. Sure - I have downloaded  UsbTreeView V2.4.3.0 and it insists on "high speed" and refuses to confirm "super speed"' i.e. it agrees with that abominable Windows notification.

9. Transfer speeds confirm that notification as well.

10. All hardware info can be found in Dell's site under service tag #: < >

Any ideas please?

Zoner, you write: "We can't expect every Dell employee to have an eidetic memory in regards to every product line". I expect a Dell person to write only what he is certain of...

Anyway, I join your optimistic approach and rely on the late Mahalia Jackson's eternal words: "Let's pray together" :emotion-4:

SpeedStep, you write: "If you update Bios make sure NO ANTIVIRUS software is installed"...

You are a very very tolerant person. If any machine demanded uninstalling the antivirus whenever you update drivers - you'd better scrap it....

@VernGraner,

Thank you for your post and feedback.

No updates just yet. We are investigating the concern. I will be in touch as soon as I know more.

Have a great weekend.

I have what appears to be the exact same problem and went through almost the exact same diags/processes as described above.

Machine: Dell Latitude E6540 IN tel i7-4800MQ 16g RAM

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit w/SP1

Issue: When I plug in a USB 3.0 Super Speed capable device, I get the "This device can perform faster." dialog as shown here:

I am trying to connect a "Plugable UGA-3000" USB display adapter to my laptop for a 3rd monitor. The "USB Device Tree Viewer" tree shows the device is capable of using "super speed" as shown here:

Same thing when I plug in a USB 3.0 external hard drive. IN this case it is a Western Digital MyBook 3T drive. It shows this when connected:

And again, SUB Tree shows it is indeed capable of performing at Super Speed:

So, it appears that all my USB 3 peripherals are all running at USB 2.0 speeds. This is disappointing. :(

Any updates from Dell on this issue and when it will be corrected? Is there any other data I can provide to assist in the troubleshooting?

Hello Justin, thank you for responding.

I have a few questions:

  1. Who (department or division) is working on the issue?
  2. Has anyone in that department been able to verify/replicate the behavior reported?
  3. Is this issue only affecting the E6540 or are there other machines that report it as well?
  4. Has the issue been assigned a tracking number or bug identification number?
  5. Do you have a timeline for when the issue should be addressed?

Please let me know if there is any additional information you need to assist you with resolving this issue. Thank you.

Do you really expect an honest answer from Dell?

nidany, I don't care if you started this thread or not - I'm getting real sick of your combativeness and negativity.  Give Dell time to investigate so we can ALL get the issue fixed, or live in your misery by yourself.

Hi z0ner,

I do apologize if the language I've used sounded "negative & combative" to you. This might be attributed to cultural differences between where I live (the Netherlands) and where others live.

Another reason is my "history" with Dell concerning 2 other computers in the past: They were always very courteous but did not resolve the problems.

However, I accept your suggestion to "give Dell time to investigate". Perhaps your attitude will prove to be the appropriate one.

So let's sit back and wait to see...

  1. If they provide a solution
  2. When will they do?
  3. Will it be a real, acceptable solution?

I sincerely hope my pessimistic approach will prove wrong this time and do solemnly promise to be the first to admit it.

I have a very similar experience. Everything was working great until I decided to upgrade firmware from A05 to A12. Now I'm stuck with USB 2.0 performance.

I have exactly the same experience, except I have had the issue since a previous bios update don't know exactly from which version I upgraded to A12. But with my previous bios version my USB devices where automatically ejected after a few minutes. This is solved by the upgrade to A12, but now I only have USB 2.0 speed...

Please provide us a solution quickly!

@Community,

Thank you for your ongoing feedback.

All I can say right now is that we're working on the Latitude E6540 USB 3.0 concern. I will most certainly post back once I have a more firm answer.

Justin,

Thank you for the reply, but I was hoping you could be a bit more specific. In your answer you said :

"we're working on the Latitude E6540 USB 3.0 concern"

Can you tell us who "we're" is? I would like to know specifically if a department or division or person(s) is working on this issue.

Also what are you/they "working on"..? Has the failure of the E6540 to perform at USB3 speeds been officially verified as a bug? If so, can you give us bug tracking information please?

Thank you!

Vern
