Error Code 5300:1028 during the LCD ALS Sensor Test Diagnostics on Studio 15

Synopsis: I recently (less than a month ago) purchased a Studio 15 and ran the Diagnostics available from F12 on boot.  I consistently get Error Code 5300:1028 during the “LCD ALS Sensor Test” and "Msg: BIOS – get inverter type interface function failed".  I'm hoping someone with a Studio 15 will run the same diagnostics and let me know if they get the same error.

Details: I ran the Diagnostics available from F12 on boot, the Extended Diagnostics, and the Custom Diagnostics as part of checking out the new machine.  When I got the error code I called Dell Technical Support.  The technician initially said it was probably my hard drive or memory.  I pointed out those tests ran clean.  When I emphasized the test that failed was in the LCD section the agent said I had a problem with my external monitor.  I pointed out that I hadn't connected an external monitor yet, and the agent said I would probably have a problem when I do, and suggested I ship the laptop back to Dell for testing.  Since then I have connected an external monitor.  I have not noticed any problem with the laptop display or the external monitor.  In trying to research this error I'm assuming that "ALS" refers to an Ambient Light Sensor.  I don't think my laptop even has an Ambient Light Sensor.  I've contacted Dell since to question whether this error is occurring because the laptop doesn't have an Ambient Light Sensor, but all I get in response is the laptop has to be returned to Dell to answer the question.  I feel like I'm getting script responses as opposed to thinking or help.  I would think that the Diagnostics would sense the absence of an ALS and skip the test or that the Diagnostics loaded on my Studio 15 would not have an ALS test if the laptop does not have an ALS, so I'm puzzled at the result.

Request: Would someone with a Studio 15 please run the Custom Diagnostics and let me know what you get on the LCD ALS Sensor Test?  You can run just the LCD tests without the other tests to save time.

Thanks

For what it's worth, the problem unfortunately isn't dead.  I just got a brand new Studio 1537, and already I am unable to start it.  I get the Blue Screen of Death and System Restore failed.  I ran diagnostics and got this same error message.  I suppose this means I'll be punished with having to call a Dell tech.

Cheers, everybody.

GraveDirt,
I’m sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing with your Studio 15, but I doubt they are related to the 5300:1028 error code.  I consistently get the 5300:1028 error on running diagnostics, but I don’t have the other symptoms you listed.  The others who responded with this same error code did not mention those symptoms either.

Good luck troubleshooting the problems you are having.

I received an email from a post made by Paulf inquiring about the status of this problem since he saw it when running the diagnostics as well.  Unfortunately when I try to find his post in the forum it displays "Not Found: Resource Not Found ".  I’m not sure what happened to his post.

However, his post prompted me to let people know that all of the information I have gotten on this diagnostic since the previous post is consistently indicating a problem with the diagnostic routine and not a problem with the hardware.

Hope this helps.

I realize this is many years later but I just found this article reasearchin "lcd als sensor". I work with Dell E6410 laptops which do have an ALS and the extended system diagnostics just showed that error except the same 5300:1028 text is "BIOS - write, switch and get interface function failed." (Not inverter.)

I held my thumb over the ALS and the screen dimmed. I released my thumb and the screen brightened.

In the past, earlier diagnostics could sometimes not enable the pointing stick controller, but later diagnostics have never failed to enable it, and in both cases the pointing stick worked fine, showing the diagnostics can be bad. (Our "build" is V1394.1, which might be the diagnostics version. We're running with BIOS 13 which appears to be the latest for E6410.)

If the Studio 15,17, 1735, etc have an ALS and it's a laptop the ALS should be in the frame, at the top of the screen. Some may think it's a camera, but our E6410s don't have cameras. It's a square, clear or smoky glass/plastic and sure looks like a camera, about 3 or 4mm on a side (.25 inches) place about 1/3 of the way across the LCD panel, on the left.. If it's a desktop, it likely doesn't have ALS - why would it have an ALS? If it's a Dell monitor it could have an ALS. (Sorry, I just haven't researched what these Studio things are.)

To enable the ALS, if it's a laptop with a keyboard like ours, hold the blue-ish/purple-ish Fn key and select the left-pointing arrow key which says  "Auto" in that same blue-ish/purple-ish color and has an icon that I suppose is a light/sun but it alos looks like a gear or toothed wheel.

I re-ran that one diag test and it passed. The LCD is NOT an ACG (another option for the E6410) and therefore I believe our laptops do NOT have inverters. (But it could be my Mac I'm thinking about.)
