External hardrive install error

i have an inspiron e1505. i am trying to connect an external harddrive (seagate pro 750gb). Received an installerror. i then looked at device management . uninstalled usb drivers, uninstalled the usb mass storage device. I also looked at computer management . the drive is visible with a healthy status, but no letter assignment.  i then assigned it a letter and then tried to explore the drive from computer management. i was surprised to see that the drive opened up. After i clicked on the folders button in the toolbar, i saw an icon representing the drive but with no name. after a reboot i have to start all over again.

can anybody help me

erm did you format the drive at all that should be your first step after the drive is recognised.

The drive works just fine on my desktop, but not my wifes laptop. i thought that it might be a USB problem but the thumb drives and cordless mouse work. i still have yet to try the reformat option. will try it if there are no ther solutions and i have some time

I wouldnt think its something that extreme if Laptop is as factory sent though I never stay with a factory filled uselessware installed Laptop.... I allways on laptops becaue I cant build them as easelly as a Desktop, format the drive and start again, theres plenty of how-tos everywhere.

Personal offtopic comment... If only it was as easy to build great looking and very powerfull laptops like you do desktops I would never Buy a Laptop again why?

I have 10++ year old mahines that never failed never moaned and allways till this day work as well as the first day I built them though 10++ years ago Building a desktop yourself meant being slighly resourceful. guess that what it takes from buying and picking your parts instead of being forced to take poor quality componests rushed past quality control thats Some companies put inside machines and are assembled as a job they cant wait to get out of, not a labour of love... Does dell use artic silver in their new machines as a thermal compound or do they just get any old preassebled gue?

ONTOPIC now sorry mate.

Seriously now do all other usb devices work well on the laptop if the answer is no you may be looking at harware issues with the usb controller...

Worth also looking in Bios and checking if both usb 1.0 aqnd usb 2.0 compatibility is enabled they should if that doesnt help you may like I said need a service call to repair you latpot under warranty

but please look at this post before you do.

eggcelent, though that is a command to repair files nothing to do with the drive so somewhere you had currupt files which ended up getting fixed, I suggest you start looking for a reformat of OS, seems like you may eventually have no other choice.

I recommand Acronis true image I image the whole HDD including all partition the rest is a playground... Takes 30~40 minutes to reeinstall windows + another 20 days to get it all up to date with avronis I never have to reeistall windows or mess around with more long waiting for depending on OS a zillion updates..

its on my signature have a read.
