first time laptop user

Have not registered my new laptop Inspiron 15 yet because my old Dell desktop keyboard is different from the laptop keyboard, and and the booklet that came with it gives no instructions on using it other than to using the pad to scroll up/down/sideways, and to increase or decrease a picture or "whatever" .  Two long bars under the pad are for what ?  What do the keys at the top do ? When do I use the "esc" key ?  If I get a reply please remember I know absolutely nothing about using a laptop and need explanations in "first grade" answers....very specific....can't register or understand some of the stuff I'm supposed to do to use the thing correctly.    Genesis

The laptop keyboard should be more or less the same as a desktop keyboard. Except for the fact that it is made more compact due to space limitations. It should work as normal, the fn key is used in combination with the f keys and up and down arrows to turn on WiFi etc. Also for the number triangle. The touchpad below the keyboard is the laptops replacement for a keyboard.

The function key layout is interesting compared to other notebook models, with use of the function keys backwards. Normally to adjust the brightness or volume, or toggle the WiFi settings you press the FN-key, then the appropriate function key. Dell went with a setup where the secondary command is now primary. To put it another way, if you want to hit F5 to refresh a webpage, you now need to press FN+ the brightness up key.

I Listed the Primary key functions below.

1 - Left mouse key sometimes called left click
2 - Right mouse key sometimes calle right click
3 - Switches the video output to an external monitor if you have one hooked up
4 - Turns your wireless adapter on and off
5 - The battery indicator
6 - Turns the monitor brightness down
7 - Turns the monitor brightness up
8 - Speaker mute button
9 - Turns speaker volume down
10 - Turns speaker volume up
11 - CD/DVD drive eject button
12 - Power on/off button

The keys in the box are for your multimedia.
Rewind, stop/play, forward

As for the escape key, you would use it like you have in the past.  It is no different now.
