Help! mouse clicking by itself!

Question

I own an Inspiron 6000. After 15-40 minutes of use the mouse starts clicking by itself uncontrollably. I have run virus checks and nothing has come up. Does anyone know why this is happening and what i can do about it? I bought a logitech mouse a year ago and I am beginning to wonder whether the constant logitech driver updates are starting to conflict with the internal mouse drivers. I have called Dell support but all they know how to do is install spybot for you so are no help at all. thank you Rob

Honestly I have never seen this before but you should first try another mouse to see what happens. I never cared for the logitech mouse myself as there seems to always be issues. Get a cheap mouse that uses the standard windows drivers and test it. I like the Microsoft optical mice myself. You could totally uninstall the logitech drivers and reboot and when windows finds it again install the software that came with the mouse. But to save a lot of guessing and time simply try another mouse and see what happens.

How long has this problem existed? Many times problems like this can take hours and days to troubleshoot and I have found that after all those hours the problem is never resolved. So my guess is this is the reason for Dell's recommendation. When you did the scan and found the virus was it done from the safe mode? Reason I ask is in order to get rid of a virus and stop it from reappearing you need to turn off system restore, boot to the safe mode and do the scan and remove it. But before we go that far I would not turn off the system restore just yet. If this problem just started not long ago then you might try to use the windows system restore under accessories and restore back to a date before this problem started. If that doesn't work then to be sure this virus is completely removed then you would need to turn off system restore and scan the computer from the safe mode but after making sure all virus definitions are up to date spybot. Are you sure the system isn't running hot?

Thank you for replying dbramlet, i really appreciate that. Initially the problem occured whether the logitech mouse was plugged in or not, however, to be sure I did uninstall the logitech mouse completely. I also did a spybot scan and discovered some kind of virus called 'doubleclicking' and when i removed it the problem improved sightly but did not dissapear completely. What happens now is that when i switch on my laptop everything is fine but after a period of between 20minutes to an hour the mouse starts to click by itself (external mouse unplugged and uninstalled). It happened during a professional presentation end of last year and my powerpoint went absoultely nuts with slides flicking through at breakneck speed by itself. i swear i have never been so embarrased. ofcourse dell recommends wiping my hard drive and reinstalling windows but then they have no lateral thought capability. I wish they would just think about the nature of the problem and use their experience to work out where the troublesome code might be hiding. I am also concerned that faulty circuitry is to blame and that when the laptop starts getting warm this somehow triggers the effect. The timing and nature of the problem is completely random which means that if it is a virus the coding may simply generate a random time elapse to start the problem and then vary how bad the problem is. I used the laptop yesterday for 2 hours and nothing happened at all.. its so very weird..... Thanks again for taking the time to answer.. maybe this additional information will help some more..
