Hiss / noise when using headphones with Vostro 1000 Laptop

I hear a hiss when my headphones are plugged in. The hiss has the same pattern as the sound a processor makes when its 'busy'. The hiss goes away when: I unplug the AC plug, or when I hit the mute button while it's plugged in. I tried updating the drivers to fix it and that doesn't work.

IS there a fix for this?

Thanks jimco.  Good to know i'm not alone.

Well, as expected the HDD replacement did not work.  (note: the quality of the hiss/interference did change, i suspect due to the fact that it is a different drive, fujitsu replacing seagate.)

Now support says they have a new replacement they can do.  The Audio Jack Daughter Board Service Kit.
The on-site tech will be bringing a new MOBO and this new kit.  I'll report back on Friday.

A glint of hope.  :smileyindifferent:

MathewSchreiber:

Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, relaying information into Technical Support from our forums, is an ongoing challenge. One thing we have recently put into place that you may have noticed, is our new Accepted Solutions feature on this board.

Accepted Solutions FAQ

This was implemented to not only make it easier for customers to quickly recognize an issue and solution, but eventually feed the information more quickly into our frontline support agents as well.

It's not perfected yet, but we are aware of the problem and working very hard to make the necessary changes.  :smileyhappy:

Let me know if your service fixes the issue you are seeing.  If it does not, hit me up on a Private Message and I will see what I can do.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

Just got a new mother board, and the audio jack was also replaced.  NO CHANGE.

Thought I'd throw my two cents in on this, since I have the same problem with my Vostro 1000 laptop. My dad's an electrician, and he explained that the problem is just the electromagnetic interference from the current coming into the computer - that's why the hissing noise goes away when you unplug it. So there's really nothing that can be done to solve it, unfortunately - it's just a problem with the design of the computer (there's shielding they could have put in to prevent this, but they apparently didn't). Hopefully they'll fix the issue and include the proper shielding on future models...
