How to reset Configuration Password ?

You will need to contact Dell and provide them the information to prove that you are the owner on record with Dell.  Once you have done this, they will supply you with a master password to unlock your BIOS.

 

What if you are not the original owner? I bought a Latitude CP M166ST from an estate sale and I do not have any password, so I cannot access it. What recourse do I have ?

Unfortunately, your only recourse is to contact us and provide proof of purchase and then transfer the system into your name, then we can give you the password.

What do you mean you don't have proof of purchase. Did you pay cash? Or use a CC? What you bought it at a yard sale?? If you can not supply any proof of purchase you are out of luck.

I've bought and sold MANY Dell's at auctions and elsewhere - and if you talk to the tag team folks and explain the situation they will be able to help you get it transferred to your name. 

Make sure you explain to them that you purchased it at an auction (VERY important!!!).  Dell DOES recognize auctions as legitimate ownership transfer, and obviously original owner information is not always available in these cases.

It may take a number of days (I've had it take over a month!) and they may well investigate it, (and you should have SOME receipt from the auction - or be able to get one!) but you should be ok.  Generally thieves dont bother to call them up to register it in their own names :)
