Inspiron 1564: White screen at boot

I have a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Windows 7, only two months old and I am having problems with the screen. Sometimes (not all the time) when I boot up my computer, as soon as Windows starts loading the screen goes white. I can hear the sounds of windows loading in the background. This also happens when I sometimes power up from a sleep mode, or when playing 720p video and skipping forward too fast.

Please note that I have only noticed this happen on battery power, as far I as know it has never happened when on AC power. Closing the lid and opening it again fixes the issue sometimes, otherwise I have to plug the charger in and reboot.

Also I have noticed a slight constant flickering of the screen when on battery power, this is only noticeable on black screens or backgrounds. As soon as I plug in the charger this flickering ceases.

I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me whether this is a hardware or a software problem and if there are any known fixes. If its hardware I'll have to send it in under warranty (which I'm hoping not to since that would mean sending it to the country I bought the laptop from).

Specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium

Intel i3 2.13Ghz

4GB DDR3 RAM

ATI Mobility Radeon 5450 1GB

Laptop was sent back to Dell shortly after my last post to have the damage repaired. After 10 days with me having to chase for updates, the laptop was returned to me mended, a whole new plastic case which is great. So far so good with the screen too, no flickering or white screens yet even when battery low.

If anyone searches this post like I did, check also the following thread for a reply.  They indicate reseating the display cable.  I found it because I had a white screen on startup and restart after hibernation.  The screen is white until I move the laptop display, which fixes the issue (until the next time I close the lid).  You can find instructions to access the cable for your computer on the dell support website.  Best wishes!

I started having the same problem recently.  I am plugged in to the wall, and also using sometimes an external monitor plugged into the hdmi port.

In addition to the 'lid' solution, I've noticed that pushing the 'monitor' button (F1) once or twice also seems to 'solve' the problem.  The computer will shake itself out of whatever mode it's in and in to the new monitor mode I've selected.  Once the screen comes back, I just change the monitor configuration back to what I want it to be...
