inspiron 5160 problems

Question

I have an inspiron 5160 and if I move the screen the laptop while not swithing off completely, it makes a noise and the screen goes black. If I hold the on/off switch it shuts down then I have to re boot. Any movement on the laptop and it does this if I dont move it it works fine its ok to type and use as normal can anyone help please????????

You'll either need to have the system board replaced, or if you can find a shop similar to AQS, have the existing one repaired. By the time the pressure-shutdown problem occurs, the board has been damaged.

I'm pretty sure the 5160 uses the same motherboard and design as the 5150 so the following should be applicable, if not then ignore my ramblings!:   The problem seems to stem from a tab on the plastic covering (panel C on the bottom of your laptop) pushing against an IC chip on the motherboard causing damage. Some people have apparently fixed the problem by cutting off this tab from the panel so that pressure is no longer placed on the chip. Do some more searches on the internet and you'll find a number of sites with this information.   This should be Dell's problem to fix as its a design fault. Dell US and the Netherlands have started repairing 5150's out of warranty, for overheating problems, loss of AC charging, and this 'damage to an IC chip due to bad design of the casing' problem.   Unfortunately, after phoning their Tech Support and Customer Services today I've come to the conclusion that Dell UK don't seem to have a clue about whats happening at the moment. My advice would be to gather some more information from the internet for this wide spread problem and then get on to Dell Tech Support for a free repair. I think if enough of us start harassing them they'll finally wake up.
