Inspiron 6000 and S/PDIF

I just ordered an Inspiron 6000 and I'm concerned about one thing... My old laptop (an Inspiron 8200) had a 7-pin s-video port and came with an adapter that plugged into it allowing s-video, composite video, and S/PDIF out connections... I notice on the specs that the 6000 has the same 7-pin connector, but nowhere does it say anything about having S/PDIF. I know the sound chip in the system supports it, so I'm wondering if I can just use the adapter from my old laptop to get S/PDIF out on the new one, or if that pin isn't connected to anything on the 6000... If anyone can tell me if the adapter works with the 6000, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I just did some research myself, as well as talked to a service rep with the online chat thing, and it looks like it will work... The service rep said it should work, and the pin-out diagram shown on the service manual is the same as for the 9300, whose manual specifically mentions the dongle (since it comes with it). The confusing thing is that the pin-out diagram for the 8200 specifically says pin 5 is S/PDIF, while the diagrams for the 6000 and the 9300 have the marking NC for pin 5... I'm not sure what NC stands for, but the other pins are the same for all three, so if S/PDIF works on both the 8200 and the 9300, it makes sense that it should work on the 6000...

So I guess the question is, why doesn't the 6000 come with the same dongle and why does the manual and specs for the 6000 only mention a dongle for s-video and composite video, and doesn't say anything about S/PDIF? You would think that if it's capable of it, they'd at least mention it as an option with the purchase of the proper adaptor (since they already advertise an adapter for the composite video)...

Anyway, is there anyone here with an Inspiron 6000 and one of those dongles for S/PDIF who can test this out? And any idea why they don't advertise this? If no one else can answer, I'll test for myself in a couple weeks, when they deliver my new Inspiron 6000, and post here, if others are curious.

NC is an abbreviation for No Connection. That is probably a typo in the I9300 documentation, probably accurate in the I6000 documentation. From these forums and the documentation, I gather the I6000 doesn't provide an S/PDIF output.

Yeah, that's what I thought NC stood for too, until I saw it in the 9300 specs... Anyway, unfortunately, you're right, it doesn't work on the 6000, so I'm returning the laptop. That's not the only reason, since the video out provided by the Intel chip was horribly implemented, and since one of my main uses for my laptop is watching movies and such, and displaying them on my TV with the sound going to my surround sound receiver, those two things have to be as good or better than my old laptop, or it's not worth buying. Anyway, I'm now looking at ordering a refurbished 9300... Fortunately, those have S/PDIF and use either NVIDIA or ATI chips, both of which I know have good TV out implementations.

Anyway, thanks for the response! Too bad they shipped my laptop too quickly, so I couldn't just cancel the order.
