inspiron 6000 dual display resolution problems

Question

when I plug in a secondary monitor or a TV via S-Video. the primary display's (which is my laptop) resolution automatically changes to 1024 x 768 and there is no way to change it back to full resolution. the only way to get back to full reslution is after switching off or unplugging the secondary monitor or extending the desktop to the secondary monitor.

my old 5150 with an nvidia go5200 doesn't do this.

Is this normal behaviour with radeon cards or is there a fix for this? ive already updated to the latest bioss and video drivers from dell

When video is going to the S-video or VGA port as a dual display, the LCD screen on your laptop maxes out at 1024x768.  There is a fit resolution to display option in the intel drivers, that will get rid of the black box surrounding everything.   AGNP

thanks for your input but my laptop is using ATI Radeon X300 card and I'm trying to set the display to full resolution of 1680 x 1050 when its set to dual display via the S-Video out.

it does NOT have surrounding "black box"

The resolution will be limited to 1024x768 when you are driving a TV (via-Svideo).

I understand that it limits the resoltuion on the TV which is fine but it also limits the LCD screen resolution on the laptop.

my old Inspiron 5150 with an nVidia card can still so full resolution on the laptop screen even if the TV out is set to a lower resolution.

not really... cos if i extend the desktop to the secondary monitor the resolution on the laptop is ok and will not be limited to 1024 x 768.

i'm referring to setting the secondary monitor or TV as dual display (clone) . even when connecting a 21 inch CRT monitor capable of resolutions up to 1600 x 1200. my laptops lcd is still locked at 1024X768 :(

I have the same problem whenever I connect to a TV thru the S-Video or to a projector thru the VGA out. I had an old Inspiron 8200 with the ATI Radeon 9000 card, and it never had this problem. I have already configured Overlay to Theatre Mode (for viewing videos on TV), and tried to duplicate the corresponding settings from the old laptop, but all to no avail. This is particularly annoying because the TV (1024x768) and projector (1600x1200) have 4x3 aspect ratios, which causes the items on the LCD display look fat.

I can't get my S-Video to work at all. As it is, I have my laptop display as 1, and a Monitor connected to VGA output as 2, and they work fine. My main goal is to have both displays, 1 and 2, as external, and I was hoping the S-video could be 1 instead of the laptop display. Is this even possible?
