Inspiron 6000 Monitor

The monitor on my Inspiron 6000 monitor has blacked out.  Called Dell - told me to remove hinge cover and check for exposed wires.  Didn't see any.  Can hook up to external monitor and it works fine.  How difficult is it to replace the back light or should I try something else.  Good computer - works great - don't want to buy new one but the computer repair places are charging $150 to diagnos problem not counting repairs.  Any suggestions on what to try??

without the external monitor and with I6000 switched on, if you shine a torch on the screen can you see anything? If you can I believe it's likely to be the backlight - it's worth trying anyway so you don't replace the backlight only to find it is something else.  I'm amazed at the diagnostic charges you quote - it's gone up an awful lot.
