Inspiron 6000 SD Card problems...
Greets,
I just recieved my new Inspiron 6000 yesterday, and barring this problem the machine rocks. However, the SD Card slot is completely unresponsive. I've tried over the phone tech support, but to no avail.
After trying two different SD/MMC cards, no activity in the My Computer window or audio cue indicating something was inserted. According to the Device Manager, all pieces -which includes the SDA Stabdard Compliant SD Host Controller- are all working as they should.
I've ran into some literature about using the Disk Manager to assign it it's own drive letter, but all I find are the C drive and two letter-less partitions (my suspicion is some kind of Dell Restore stuff sits within).
After reading all of the literature regarding the 700m remedy, I'm hoping that this can be resolved with some kind of tweak or driver fix.
By the way- I don't know if this has any bearing, but I'm running XP Media Center Edition 2005. My thanks in advance, as I hope I don't need to make use of the box their sending me!

Although I am using XP Home, I can't imagine why your Media Center Edition should be any different. There might be a hardware issue there, I am not sure. I just received my i600 a week and a half ago, so all of the build drivers should be the same.

Thanks much for entertaining this, guys. I've got an update of sorts, with half the results I wanted and the other half not so much.
Shortly around the time I posted my initial question, I ran into the page linked here:
According to this, the on-board controller won't recognize MMC cards, as they're denoted by having 7 connectors as opposed to 9. Since both of the cards I tried had 7 connectors, it was apparent that I would recieve no love from the reader. So, deciding to check if the reader is indeed defective, I ran to the nearest Best Buy to pick up a SanDisk card- a 128 meg one with 9 connectors.
Sure enough, as per your experience, wonka187, I got the little audio chime I so dearly wanted to hear earlier today, and with it the dirty resonance of a buried help file taunting "I told you so." It's rather poor that Dell couldn't spring the cash for whatever little extra they had to for the computer to support MMC cards. As for compatibility, remember: 9 is the magic number. Why Dell doesn't make this more evident when purchasing a PC, I'll probably never find out. I could have saved two hours this morning had it been brought to my attention on the tech-support call. On the bright side, it doesn't need to be MIA for any period of time.
To answer your question, lenwa, while I can't recall for certain, I believe that Firewire and the SD slot are standard on the 6000s. Just make sure that you've got a card with 9 connectors on it.

hi all,
I have the same problem. I m usin also a SD card with 9 pins on inspiron 6000.
I got today my digitalcamera. but I could not use the SD card.
Do anybody have a idea, how I/we can use the cards on our laptop ???????????

So....I think I may have found a fix for you (I think). Here is a XP driver for the Ricoh SD card reader R5C576 (three download links - same file, just in case one is down):

This driver is dated 03/20/03. There's one catch though...it looks like the SD card reader in the i6000 is a R5C576A (<--notice that "A" on the end). I would think that most of the input/output commands for R5C576 and R5C576A would be the same - but as is, you can't install the driver that I referred to you...unless you modify the .INF.
I have modified the .INF, and if someone who has a non-working SD card slot wants to try it, I would be more then happy to email it to you. Just replace the .INF in the driver folder with the one I send you. Post your email addy here (or just email me at wonka187@hotmail.com) and I will shoot over the modified .INF over to you - then if this thing works, I know there are people here on the board who can host the entire driver with my modified .INF to make the install easier in the future.

According to Windows XP Device Manager, the PCI vendorID:DeviceID is 1180:0822 (subsystem is 1028:0188). Looking this up at http://pciids.sourceforge.net/iii/?i=1180 shows this is a Ricoh R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter so in theory an MMC card should work. Has the i6000 changed hardware since it was first released? My laptop was bought earlier this year.
