Inspiron N5110 "Plugged in, not charging"

I have an Inspiron N5110 and have a charging problem.  With my Dell AC adapter as well as with a like aftermarket ac adapter I can neither charge my battery or boot up my computer.  With a borrowed aftermarket 100W ac adapter, I can boot up my computer and it operates fine except I get a "plugged in, not charging" message above my battery icon.  I have replaced the daughter board that houses the ac plug with new.  I have purchased a new battery and get the same results.

Reading advice from a Dell technician in this forum, I updated my BIOS, only to then receive the "blue screen of death".  Yikes!  I had to reinstall my operating system just to make my computer usable again.  I thought that perhaps reloading the operating system would resolve my battery charging issues but no such luck.

I absolutely use my laptop for hours every day and am beside myself.  HELP please????

First thing to try is a new OEM Dell AC adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:

And if that does not solve it, replace the mainboard.

Check the BIOS setup - F2 at powerup.  If the AC adapter is showing "unknown", the system won't charge the battery.  If that's the case, you need to try a new OEM Dell adapter first.  If that doesn't solve the issue, replace the DC jack (link below).  And if that fails to solve it, replace the mainboard.

If the AC adapter IS recognized but the battery won't charge, odds are the battery needs to be replaced.

The DC jack is this part:

I had the exact same problem. I took my laptop to Staples and asked the technician to plug it in to one of their adapters. Ha! Showed "plugged in, charging". I purchased the ac adapter the technician used. I believe it was a targa. SO definitely was an a/c adapter problem but did not have to buy a Dell adapter. I did everything else first (changed the jack, etc) to no avail. This was the best solution for me.

hi N70

i've tried that steps but not working also my battery is charging up till 73% then it stops and it says
73% available, plugged in ,not charging
this all happens after i used another dell charger on my office rather than mine when the battery was about 7 % and it charges it up to 18 % then i go up then i had to go so i disconnect it,
i have doubts that the charger destroys some cells of the battery am i right? shall i change my battery or my charger or both?

If the AC adapter is recognized correctly but the battery won't charge, it's time to replace the battery.

Hi N7U

I have a similar problem with power on an Inspiron 5110.  I had to rebuild the laptop due to a hard drive failure.  I installed a new hard drive and installed windows 7 premium; everything worked fine.  Went to Dell update site and installed all the latest drivers.  The only recommended update that I didn't install is a bios update.  I can't do that one because the laptop won't recognize the AC adapter to power the laptop or charge the battery.  I followed your recommendation to remove battery, unplug AC adapter, hold down power button 30 seconds and try to start on AC, without the battery.  It will not start and there are no indications of power.  I've verified the power adapter is good on another laptop.  The AC adapter worked fine before the hard drive failure.  Any troubleshooting suggestions?  Thanks
