Installing Windows XP in another partition
We've received a Dell Latitude E5520 and want to install Windows XP on another partition. Out of the box, it was installed with a healthy Windows 7, which at least allows us to Shrink the existing partition where we can format a new one NTFS. Prior to formatting, when I try and install XP, I get a BSOD 0x0000007B, which apparently means that an eligible boot sector cannot be found.
So... Is what we want to do possible without doing away with the Windows 7 partition? Or other boot and/or recovery partitions Dell includes out of the box?

Your best bet is to run XP under Virtual PC (XP Mode) if you have 7 Pro, Ultimate or Home.
Failing that, the next best thing is to buy a second hard drive and use it for XP.
Otherwise, you're in for a ground-up reload of everything to get what you want to work.

I don't know that we do have one. I've left the Windows 7 partition alone. When the laptop boots it prefers the Windows XP partition now. I believe we can make it "dual bootable", but that's something we can do later if needs be. For now, we have our XP partition, and that's sufficient to get the job done for what we need.

Be sure you have a Windows 7 disc - you will need to rewrite the boot sector once the process is done.

Well, we are going with the instructions here:

Basically, we Shrink and create a second partition. Then setup the disks for ATA and not SATA support. Then install XP in the new partition.
Will see how that works...
