Lacking software to connect camera to USB port

Question

I cannot get my 600m to connect to new Canon A540. Computer is nearly 1 year old. I am running Dell OEM XP Pro w/ SP2. I downloaded camera's software, no problem.

When I connect camera, the "Found new hardware" wizard runs and says "The file ptpusd.dll on Windows XP Pro SP2 CD is needed". The device manager recognizes it, but says there is a conflict and will not connect.

Because the OS all came pre-loaded on my computer, I have no disc.

I have searched the Dell, Canon and Microsoft sites with no luck.

Does anybody know where I can get the files I need to connect this camera?

Sites offering free downloads of the file. I've not used any of these sites myself, so be sure to run your antivirus on whichever one you download.

Thanks so much for your reply! I went to a site and installed the file, no problem.

Now it is asking for "usbscan.sys" file, also on SP2. Grrrrrrrr.

If this camera and software did not work so pefectly on my other laptop, I would think they were defective.

TomDME, Have a look in Windows Explorer to see if it is present. C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers. Try running Check Disk with both options ticked, you will likely have to reboot to start it.

I just pop the complact flash card out of my camera and use one of those docking ports connected to my Inspiron 9100 through a USB cable.  No muss, no fuss, and works faster too. Steve

Thank you very much, Alex and Steve for trying to help me out. I appreciate you both taking the time to reply to this.

The files I need are not there on my hard drive. I think I am going to get a card reader and do it that way.

I have had absolutely no problems with this Dell, up until this point. The thing that really irritates me is, that I have had two other cameras, an MP3 player, my flash drive and four different printers connected to the USB ports without any problems, at all. And this camera works perfectly on my wife's Toshiba. Appox. the same age, the only difference is, I have XP Pro, she has XP Home.

I think Dell cheated and did not load ALL the files from SP2.

This will be last computer I buy without getting the OS disc. Probably my last Dell too.

Tom,

If your wife has the XP disc for her Toshiba, can you not just use that to extract the files you need ?
