Laptop Shutdown HELP!!!!!
I'm having problems with my inspiron 5100 spontaneously shutting down when I'm using it. I do not use it other than to surf the web and sync my pda, but I do have some things connected to it (pda, printer, dell jukebox). When it shuts down I'm not using it abnormally but it does seem hot. I was wondering if anyone thinks this is a faulty laptop or if someone new how to fix this problem. It's still under warranty and I only bought it about six months ago. Thanks for your help.

Make sure that you give plenty of 'breathing room' free of clutter around the machine, check to see if the cooling fan(s) are running.
FWIW a friend of mine once complained that his computer was shutting down unexpectedly, when I visited I found the computer was in his room and the desk on which it was sat, backed onto a central heating radiator.......the cooling fan was drawing in the hot air rising from the rad and attempting to cool the computer. Once the machine was re-sited away from the heating there was no further overheating shutdown probs. Perhaps worth bearing in mind?

Zesmit, I recently had the same exact problem on my 5150. I updated the bios (mine was the original bios and they since have updated it 30 times!). After the bios was updated it has run perfect!
Goodluck,

Sorry I haven't responded quicker I have been really busy lately.
1. Go to the download section of this site http://support.dell.com/filelib/criteria.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
2. In the second option where it says select operating system...select BIOS
3. Look for something that says flash BIOS updates and look for your system number....such as Inspiron 5100
4. If you have a really old version of the BIOS such as 03 and they are up to 31 I would suggest jumping to a newer one before you go to the newest....dell switched between using pheonix bios systems and their own around A22 on my system (if you try to install the BIOS and it won't work then try an older one first before going to the newest....also search the forum on this subject if you get stuck there is a ton of info on it).
5. After selecting the file you want download their are two different types of downloads you should be concerned with. It will either be an EXE or an ISO
5A. If there is an option for an ISO download that. After it downloads if you try and open the ISO it should open Easy Cd Creator (or whatever burning program you use) then burn the ISO to a cd....restart your computer with the cd in and this will install the BIOS
5B. If there is no ISO download the EXE and run it from the desktop it should install the BIOS then you need to restart.
6. After your computer is rebooted with the new BIOS it may take a couple minutes for all your things to start working again.... this is because with a new BIOS your computer has to re-recognize the drivers on your system. It should be able to find them all by itself without you having to reinstall any of them.
Goodluck! I hope it fixes all your problems!
