Laptop Touch Screen stopped working

The screen for my laptop no longer works.  The computer is on but the screen is off.  When I open and close the clamshell (e.g., lift the screen up), sometimes there are flashes of the screen and if I'm lucky, I can hold it in a position where the screen works.  However, if I let go of the screen, it turns off and won't turn back on.  I think this is a hardware problem.  Please let me know how I can fix it.

If the system is under warranty, call Dell for repair.

If it's not, first thing to do is disconnect and reconnect both ends of the cable that runs between the mainboard and back of the display panel - and check it for damage.  If it's damaged, replace the cable.

If that does not work, next would be to replace the screen (probably the whole assembly, since the touchpanel is usually not separate from the LCD itself).

If you need further repair information, please post the system model information.
