Latitude 6430u and D5000 WiGig wireless dock

I got the D5000 in for testing today and I cannot, for the life of me, get the thing to connect.  I have the DW1601 wigig card installed, drivers installed, (Windows7 SP1)... power plugged into the dock, power switch on...press the connect button on the dock, nothing shows up in the connection manager on the laptop, and it never connects, just flashes an amber light.  Any ideas?

We ordered the 6430u pre-wigig and had to install the 1601 cards after the fact.  I am wondering if ordering got mixed up with the initial order and they are lacking the antenna's or something.

Thanks!

Ben

Figured out my issue.  There are three wires to connect to the 1601 card internally.  I only had the black and white wires connected.  There is a hidden, smaller blue wire that you need to pull out and connect to the card as well.  It's very easy to miss.  Everything is working properly now.

Manufacturer Part# : K1M51

Dell Part# : 332-1495

Compatibility

This product is compatible with the following systems:

Latitude 6430u

Latitude E6430

Performance tips for single-user environments

    • The Dell Wireless Dock D5000 is designed to enable wireless connectivity to your compatible laptop at a distance of up to 32 feet (10 meters).

    • Your Wireless Dock D5000 will work best if positioned in an elevated location. For example, position it on a table or desk, mount it on the ceiling or place it on a shelf. Try to avoid placing your wireless dock on the floor.

    • Maintain a clear line of sight between the Wireless Dock D5000 and your compatible laptop. Try to avoid placing your wireless dock behind your monitor, TV or any other devices that may obstruct its signal.

    • To achieve optimal signal strength, make small adjustments to the positions of your devices. Slowly rotate your dock or your compatible laptop and monitor the signal strength to find the best position.

    • In order to maintain a strong connection between your Wireless Dock D5000 and your compatible laptop, try to keep your laptop in the same spot where the connection was made. Moving your laptop or wireless dock may weaken or disconnect the signal.
    • Webcams are not fully supported by the Dell Wireless Dock D5000 and you may encounter performance issues when connecting an external webcam directly to it. For best results, we suggest you connect any external webcams directly to your laptop.

I too have been struggling with this whole 1601 card and wireless dock.   When I bought my 6430u, I was told any wireless card would work.   Once the wireless dock came it, it was required to have the 1601 wireless card.   After speaking with Dell, they agreed to send me the 1601 card.

When I installed the 1601 card, I could not get it to work.  Turns out it's not Windows 8 compatible ,which they failed to tell me.

Now, I see on the website that if you pick the 1601 WiGIG card, it says it's incompatible with the Blue Tooth 380 adapter.    I contacted Dell to see if that meant bluetooth wouldn't work, or the 1601 woudln't work, but they didn't know.  They suggested that I test it out and see for myself.

I won't buy another product going forward based on future peripherals that don't yet exist.

yeah- the bluetooth module needs to come out apparently.  I just talked to Dell and was told this.  In the process of trying to get the bugger out now.  Keyboard and palm rests have to come off.  WHAT A PAIN.

Still won't connect after removing the bluetooth module.

I cannot get past the exclamation point for Network Controller in device manager.  Running Windows 7 SP1 fresh install today.  Spent about 2 hours on this now.

That's the correct driver - Good luck with the replacement card!

Thanks for updating your post.  I have connected the blue wire as well, as I knew this was a triband card so would require 3 antennae's.

Unfortunately for me, in my case, it's still showing as non-functional in device manager.  I don't seem to be able to load the necessary drivers.   I tried this;

www.dell.com/.../latitude-6430u-ultrabook

When I try to manually update the driver and point at the extracted driver location, I get "Windows could not find driver software for your device".

I talked with Dell this morning and they are going to ship me a replacement 1601 wireless module to see if my card is simply faulty.

Dewnut,

I know that you resolved your issue by plugging in the little blue cable.  I was wondering though, whether your 380 Bluetooth module is still physically removed from your laptop.

I noticed in my Dell dispatch that they were sending me the wrong wlan card (The intel 6205).  While on the tech chat, my person noted that the 1601 was no longer in stock and was unavailable for warranty work.

They said they are sending out a tech tomorrow anyway (with the wrong card).  They want to have the tech physically remove the 380 bluetooth adapter and then see if the 1601 card begins working.   They think that is why this card doesn't work in my machine.

If that's the case, it might also explain why the card doesn't work under Windows 8 and after they get it working in 7, I will test again in 8.

The bluetooth module needs to stay out.  Dell told me that both cannot be installed if you want the 1601 to work.

I didn't have any issue with the driver... that's strange.  It does come up at the very start of the install and tells you that it requires .net 4.0 and C++ 2010 SP1 redist. packages installed, but it gives you the option to install them if you do not have them already.

Another issue I am having now I found during my testing is that the dock allows the WLAN and wired connection simultaneously.  There is a setting int he BIOS to disable WLAN/WWAN when wired connection is present, but it doesn't appear to work when "docked."  This is a major issue, having the two concurrent connections opens the door for dual homing, our security department is not going to allow this.  I must find a way to disable the WLAN upon wired connect.

Swapping to another 1601 wireless adapter did not help either.

Same issues here. Pulled a brand new 6430u out of the box. Removed the previously installed wireless adapter, installed the new 1601 WiGig card. Booted into Windows 7 for the first time. Removed the Intel Wireless Drivers and installed the WiGig pack. It would not load the driver for the 1601. Powered the unit down and disassembled it to remove the Bluetooth adapter. Powered backup and it still would not load the WiGig driver. Formatted the computer and ran a fresh install of Windows. Installed the WiGig pack and still... would not load the driver. Luckily, I ordered two 1601 wireless cards, I'll see if it is an issue with the card.

I think I finally got it. The link posted earlier by ppark1, and the link I had received from Dell is for Windows 8. I found this guy after a little searching as well.

www.dell.com/.../latitude-6430u-ultrabook

This looks like the proper driver for the Wireless adapter in Windows 7. Will install shortly and reply.

also... the 1601 wireless NIC has built in Bluetooth, with is why they ask you to remove the other Bluetooth module.
