Latitude E5430 - Problems with fan control

Hi, I just bought a Latitude E5430 expecting to get some Dell Business notebook Quality. I am using Windows 8 x64 (in UEFI-mode) with BIOS A09 and the latest Drivers available from dell.com.

The issue that I am encountering is that as soon as the fan turns on, it does not turn off for a long time (blowing out cool air), even though there is no high system load (just Internet Explorer opened) and the temperature is below 50C.

Basically, the fan starts at some temperature threshold, cools down the CPU to 38-40C, and even though the running fan does not cause the CPU to cool down more, it keeps running for a long time (10 minutes and counting) (while the CPU temperature constantly stays at 38-40C). :-(

Please forward this issue to the BIOS development department so that they can provide an update which improves fan control.

Everyone also having this issue, please have a look at this post from Dell-Terry B:

where he is requesting more information from users affected.

Same issue here. Bios Update A09 didnt help. My Specs: i7-3520M, Windows 8 64-bit

The continuous fan noise ist annoying and a fix would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have the exact same issue with my e5430 with core i7 3520m processor. Once the fan starts at heavy load it wont quit working, no matter how long I wait, even if the computer is idle with no processor load. Dell replaced the motherboard, fan and heat sink, still its the same. On Monday they will replace the parts again.. I like the notebook generally but this issue makes it useless. The warranty service is exceptional though. Please advise. Thanks, Daniel

My newly bought E5430 has the same issue. It's quiet when starting up; but whenever the fan starts, it seems that it will never stop, even though it's just blowing cool air.

I have upgraded my BIOS to A09, the latest version. Unfortunately, there is still no option in BIOS for its fan/thermal control, and the symptom persists.

I tried the third part software i8kfanGUI and SpeedFan, the former causes blue screen dead and the latter can only slow down the fan for a few seconds...

It took me almost a whole day to fix it and I failed. Only the manufacturer knows the details of the hardware and drivers, so please fix it either by providing a thermal control option in BIOS or using a better algorithm to reduce the unnecessary noise.

Thanks.

this is clearly a bios issue, dell can replace the components as often as they want to as long as they dont provide an update...

hope this gets read or the customer service does the right thing by providing this feedback to the bios development department.

sounds like good customer service. but i would like it more if they actually fixed the issue in the bios.

id really like to keep it, because it is a nice device.

i made dellcares aware of this thread, maybe theres a chance that they fix it.

Hi again,

After replacing the processor the fan issue persists. Dell offered either replacing the notebook or a refund.

Cheers

This is the information I received from Dell:

"Hi, we can make sure that after the parts are replaced the issue will be fixed."

So, someone who already has his components replaced would have to get his case escalated (so that they fix it in the BIOS)...

Sadly, I can not go forward with this as I am travelling right now.

E5430 with i3 is affected, too. I suppose that the whole E5430-series is affected, maybe even the E5X30-series.

On the other hand, E5520 works like a charm.

Hi again,

So I'm waiting for a refund this moment. Is it only the i7 processor version that is affected? Or is there anybody with i5 and the same problem? I'm considering what to buy next...

Thank you!

probably not, because it really sounds like a bug in the BIOS. good luck, though. hope they will find the real issue if replacing components does not fix it.

its alright if those components are warm.

Ive a E5520 for which fan control works just fine (in contrast to the E5430) and my "other" temperatures (HDD,Tempx) are 50-60C without the fan turning on.

what also speaks against your theory that its a design issue is that putting the system to sleep mode and instantly waking it up again does fix the issue (while temperatures do not really change due to this procedure).

Mine has a i5 3320 processor and is also affected.

Probably it's not due to processors. If you use SpeedFan to check the temperatures, you will find when the fan starts, the temperatures of the two cores will drop down from above 50C to below 40C. But two temperatures are reluctant to drop: hard drive and motherboard. Also, if you touch the bottom your laptop, its warmer than part near the fan. I suspect that the fan can effectively cool the processors, but not the hard drive and motherboard, so it has to keep running and system won't stop it until the motherboard return to normal temperature.

A temporary way to stop the fan is to close the screen, that will force the system to sleep mode. Once you open it again, if the cores are cool, the fan will stay silent.

Two days ago, I called technical support, then sent my laptop to Dell Depot yesterday.

The agent said they may replace some components. I hope they can fix it.

Then it's probably a BIOS issue.
