Latitude E5430 - Problems with fan control

Hi, I just bought a Latitude E5430 expecting to get some Dell Business notebook Quality. I am using Windows 8 x64 (in UEFI-mode) with BIOS A09 and the latest Drivers available from dell.com.

The issue that I am encountering is that as soon as the fan turns on, it does not turn off for a long time (blowing out cool air), even though there is no high system load (just Internet Explorer opened) and the temperature is below 50C.

Basically, the fan starts at some temperature threshold, cools down the CPU to 38-40C, and even though the running fan does not cause the CPU to cool down more, it keeps running for a long time (10 minutes and counting) (while the CPU temperature constantly stays at 38-40C). :-(

Please forward this issue to the BIOS development department so that they can provide an update which improves fan control.

Everyone also having this issue, please have a look at this post from Dell-Terry B:

I am facing this problem since i brought this product E5430. It's almost 8 months. I have return this product for repairing and support team change the FAN set and hard disk but still i am facing the same problem. some times it will take a much more time to run windows too. At that time in task manager no CPU and memery use seen. I think some problem must be there.  I have also use my friends laptop VOSTRO I3 which is much better performance than Latitude E5430 I7 Professional Windows 7.

@Terry:

Why should all the E6430 owner with the same fan-noise problems (see our PN discussion) should have a hardware failure ("fan assembly")?

It's the same fan-mismanagement like in the E5430, not hardware troubles...

So please ask engineering for a solution. It's very annoying an definitely my last DELL notebook after 12 year if there will be no solution.

Most likely they don't really care.

It would be great if you guys could reply to Terries question:

Do you use any software tools or utilities to measure span feed and temps and if so what are they?

Maybe post screenshots of HWINFO32 with A11 installed - hope that it makes engineering understand that there is still a problem (especially if there are low temperatures combined with high fan speed on the screenshots).

Sadly, I do not have access to my E5430 right now, so that I can not do it myself.

Last time I had access to my machine (with A11) it seemed to me as if nothing of the main issue had changed -  once the fan started, it never stopped (although there was no heavy load on the system).  Continued to blow cool air for a long time. So it's exactly the same problem that pottier7 reports.

This seems to be a problem in the XX3X-series, my Latitude E5520 just runs fine.

Performance wise I can not complain (i3 and SSD) and do not have the issue that upendramaharjan reports.

I should have access to the E5430 on Thursday, will do some checks and come back here again.

Terry, it would be really nice to know if engineering was able to reproduce the issue (fan not turning off after kicking on for a long time, blowing out cool air) at all so that they understand what we complain about.

Yes I have the same -  once the fan started, it never stopped (although there was no heavy load on the system).  Continued to blow cool air for a long time.

I haven't posted on this recently.  I know that engineering is still researching the issue and looking to see if they are able to tweak the system any further and still keep the system safe.  I can't promise that there will be another BIOS update and I have no ETA if they do provide another bios when it will be available.  If you wish to reduce the fan from running please make sure that you have bios revision A11 installed.

Please keep an eye open here and on support.dell.com for any further updates.

I just bought a Vostro 3460, A17,  and I have exactly the same problem. The funny thing is that when I left opened the "Windows Task Manager", the fan works perfectly and is only activated when needed.

No you can't :emotion-5:

You are long forgotten and myself too.

Just buy a new laptop but do not buy Dell. That's what I will do.

Spent big dollar on Latitude and why should we go thru such a hassle and waste time. Can we ask for refund?

Just got a Latitude E6430.  Noticed the continuous fan the minute it took it out of the Box.  It sounds by reading this thread, that this is the normal way this laptop is to operate.  I've had Dell Latitude Laptops for years - never had this issue before.  I'm going to try and resolve this using the Dell Support, but if there is no solution, I'm going to request my money back and return this to Dell.  I'm surprised Dell is not all over this issue - and to hear they are not even addressing this for the E6430 is very disappointing.

Just ordered a refurbished E5430. Really hoping I don't have this issue. Everything else about it was perfect for what I was looking for. Hopefully I don't run into any issues with return policies on a refurbished item if I have to return it due to this issue. Has there been any progress on another BIOS revision since the last post?

I have the latest A11.

I've since discovered that despite its name, the Dell "Quiet - Reduced fan noise" power plan will actually have the fan running continuously under normal use.   This is because the plan has fan set to "Active" for both battery and AC power, leaning toward performance over power savings.

So.. if you choose something like "Power Saver", or a plan with "passive fan" setting, you'll find that the fan will stop but might be more annoyed by the constant fan starting, stopping .. spinning fast, slow ..  that sort of thing.

So, as it turns out for me, I'm finding that the Dell "Quiet - Reduced fan noise" (although constant) is a decent plan in that it generally keeps the machine fast and has a constant fan noise.  I'm learning to live with it.  Otherwise the laptop really is great!

Sounds good. Thanks for your reply! After thinking about it I don't think noise will be that bad of an issue anyway. I feel the same way as well. Everything else I found about this laptop is absolutely perfect for what I wanted even down to the pointing stick.
