MODERATORS - Please make cazint's overheating post a sticky again

Just to warn everyone - I'll be cross-posting this in both the Power Management and General Hardware forums - we get way too many overheating questions in both forums.  Flame me if you want.

The post below used to be a sticky.  For some insane reason, it is no longer a sticky.  It's not like the overheating problem in the 5100s and 5150s has gone away.  The problem and solution apply to all laptops, so perhaps the title should be changed to not be quite as species-specific.

Moderators, please make it a sticky again.  It's idiotic that users are STILL being told by Customer Service to update all their drivers, reformat their hard disks, and go bark at the moon when their 5100 or 5150 starts shutting down unexpectedly, and it's inexcusable to have a well-written post like cazint's drop off the FAQ.

So does this applies to my I4100 also?

Its killing me trying to find out what the problem is.  I've tried a new battery and i am going to try a new power cord today.  It's driving me crazy too because i corrupted the boot on my laptop and i am trying to reformat and install XP, but i can't seem to accomplish it without it turning off.

Something i have noticed is that my fan NEVER turns on.  People are referring to a fan test/diagnosis, where is this located at?   Is fanGUI compatible with the I4100?

Any help is appreciated.

Yeesh.  Corrupted boot and all.  Good luck!

I don't know if i8kfangui works on a 4100 or not.  The only way to tell would be to try it.  Here's the link:

Here are a few things I can think of - maybe you've tried them, but I guess they're worth mentioning...

All computers are subject to overheating.  Laptops exhibit their sensitivity more readily, because they can't get rid of the heat as quickly as a large tower can.  Dust accumulation is the primary cause of progressive degradation of heat dissipation capability (how 'bout that for an impressive-sounding bunch of words!)  Ergo, your laptop will benefit from having the dust blown out of it, because it'll run cooler.  I've always just used the crevice attachment on my big vacuum cleaner, along with a boar-bristle drafting brush, for cleaning the dust out of desktop machines.  For my lappy, I use a can of compressed air, and the brush and/or a toothpick as needed for sticky clumps.

The primary fan on my i8500 is super-quiet on slow speed.  The only way I can tell for sure it's running (other than i8kfangui) is either to hold it directly up to my ear or lick a finger and hold it against the slots.  If it's running, I can feel it on the big intake slots on the bottom.  It very seldom turns on in normal use.  If I'm doing something intense, it'll kick in fairly regularly.  I know there's a fan test in the Dell diagnostics package for the i8500, but I'm not sure about yours.  Maybe someone else knows, and maybe i8kfangui will work anyway.  The Dell diagnostics software is in the Product Support area of the website.

Good luck, and please let us know what you find out.  That way we can pass the knowledge along to the next guy with the same problem.
