New Dell XPS 13 Fan Noise is ridiculous!

I was really looking forward to replacing my MacBook Air with the new XPS 13, but the fan noise is a deal breaker.  What I don't understand is how could Dell overlook this problem?  The Vostro V13 is very quiet and I barely notice when the fan is running.  Of course the MacBook Air is very quiet unless you are watching a video then it sounds like a hurricane.  But even with just Outlook open or browsing the web this fan in the XPS 13 is extremely annoying.

I was looking forward to finally having a windows key again.  Maybe Dell will get it right next time.  Everything else about the XPS 13 is awesome.

thanks soooo much for the quick reply.

I'd posted my comment before reading the entire thread, else I'd have known about A03

Just did the update a minute ago, seems better right off, but will check for sure and confirm.

Rayooo

Thanks for posting.  If you have not already downloaded and try the A03 BIOS please do so and let me know if it helped.

Any of you that have not already tried A03, please do so and report back if it helps.

Thanks

TB

EDIT

Here is the link for the A03 revision

yes! much better I'd say, great improvement!

one other quick question.  Now that I'm on A03...

I notice that the restore application seems to have versions A01 and A02, based on a bios version??  If I want to do a restore to dell image now, using the dell restore application, would it work, or will there need to be a revised version of the restore application linked to bios A03?

PC restore shouldn't have anything to do with the BIOS revision, it should work fine.

For more on reimaging the drive please check out the following link

AARRRG... I just updated to the new audio driver... bye bye great sound, hello crap. I used to listen to music with the sound at 22, now I have to crank it up to 90...

Nice job... maybe next you could reduce the battery life by half??

Dear Terry, I've had my XPS13 i5 for over a week now (since the UK launch) and had A03 BIOS for a couple of days.  I'm still not happy with the noise.  I really thought the machine would be dead silent for longer before any fan would be needed.  However, my main issues with A03 is that when watching streaming video the fan changes speed every couple of seconds.  I think if it was a constant frequency for at least a minute or so it would be less noticable.  Does this sound wrong?   Is there something you guys could do?

The link you gave is for the USA site, I'm in Canada. Either way, when I tried to download from your link I got "file not found".

I know that engineering is tinkering with the BIOS for optimal performance.  I don't know if any new BIOS files will be ready soon, but will update here as soon as I learn of them.

In your case I would also suggest running fan diagnostics just to make sure that there isn't a failure with your system. Just start the system holding down FN, or while tapping f12 and choose diagnostics.  Allow the PSA or basic tests to complete and then choose no for memory diagnostics.  Choose hardware diagnostics and then symptom trees and choose fan noise.

Here is a link for running extended diagnostics.

This is a pretty simple doc for diagnosing fan noise issues, but they may be some help for you

Please reply back with the results.

Terry, there is a new driver for the Centrino (Network_Intel_W74_A01_Setup-72X4V_ZPE.exe (209MB)) but when you try to download it, its says file not found.

Matthew I am sorry that the driver didn't download for you.  I am at home now and I was able to download it.  Are any others having problems downloading  version A01 15.1.0.18 of the Centrino 6230 wifi driver?  Here is a link to the driver

Thanks Terry, How do I get to the symtom tree, After pressing F12 it just runs the PSA test and then I get the option to exit, or I can select thorough test mode.

Also the first time I ran the test I got an error code processor fan failed to respond correctly.  PSA V4216 Error 2000:0511, after that I have run the test several times and it passed okay.

Also in the test menu I can see the processor fan speed and it wavers between 2961RPM and 3098RPM under low load.  This is the change in frequency I am hearing.  Is it normal for the fan to float in frequency I thought it would be fixed.

If the PSA failed, that indicates a hardware failure.  Shoot me a private message with your name and service tag and I will be happy to research service options.
