new XPS 17 "L702X" + 1080p 3D TFT = no Optimus?

Hello,

I can read everywhere, if I order the new XPS 17 with FullHD 3D TFT,

then I can´t use Optimus because the GT 555M have to run the whole time (?)

Can anyone confirm this curious "feature"? Will a FullHD-only TFT (without 3D)

also be available in the next time?

Thanxx,

AX

We are not alone,

These guys want this too

Hopefully with enough consumer pressure Dell will cave in on this...

Actually thats a good idea doing a review as there has been a fair bit of interest on this config. You are right we are very lucky having this option in australia it is a real shame that isnt like this in the states I am really very surprised, generally the US is very advanced and we usually take a while to get things like this. I am not sure if there a differnces with the regions and countries with the company but so far I have found Dell Australia to be very good they have been responsive and seem to understand customer service the sales person I have dealt with  has been excellent.

I have heard that the Anti Glare is very good and am looking forward to seeing it first hand and will be happy to give impressions to other interested people, in the hope that they shall soon have the same option, it is a massive market. I woulnt have minded 3D but not at the expense of the sandy bridge features,

I am getting the 2720qm and was shocked when I looked at a benchmark that they are out performing i7 870 and i7 920 desktops I will be happy to do a review when I receive the system on or around the 12th may and will let you guys know, I have been feeling like the cat that got the canary but I also feel bad for the people that didnt get this option yet. Hopefully that shouldnt be to far away. Maybe if we consumers keep showing a lot of interest in the sandy bridge features with HD AG screen, Dell USA will come through. I will be happy to help if I can

@Dobby125:

UPDATE: Please note that on my order placed today, I DO seem to get an Anti Glare (AG) screen. See item number in my confirmed item list for an order with  DELL.COM (USA) :

320-2538     1

17.3in FHD WLED AG (1920x1080)

DELL really does seem to be getting serious with regard to providing what we (critical) customers ask for, hence a decent high resolution screen without that bloody shine mirror in front of you (theory: is this perhaps Girl (Buying) Power that forced these glossy Glare screens in our hands ;-))  ).

Furthermore, this auto-resolves and ends the Optimus / Wi-Di issue/discussion as well, since it is simply supported by this configuration (unlike the 3D FHD screen to our dismay...)

Now the only thing missing in DELL's XPS line is those good ol' WUXGA screens (1920x1200) that I know from my XPS M1700, but I have decided not to wanna wait for that until I'm probably 6 feet under, nor turn to those relatively dull and expensive Latitude/Precision business lines...

Hi David,

I checked with DELL with regard to warranty, since I want to move my US-purchased / still to be delivered XPS 17 to the Netherlands in 2-3 months time.

Here's what they gave me:

As long as you purchase the Next Business Day On Site (or In Home Service after Remote Diagnostics) service, you should continue to receive support outside of the country where you purchased it, as long as DELL has offices there of course. For International Travel, you're covered, however also if you permanently relocate the system to another country you can retain warranty, but need to fill out an International Ownership Transfer form, see http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/international_ownership_transfer_form1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

Final note: Like me, you might experience issues with authorizing your UK-based Credit Card down under. That's is what happened to me as well. Although my CC company (AMEX) authorized the request from DELL, DELL still rejected it for unknown reasons, although I did enter my US-based shipping address (that I did register with AMEX) and also provided my NL-based billing address. In other words, going thru your cousin in Australia is a wise thing to consider here. That's is what I will do with a friend of mine that lives in Atlanta when the order gets turned down again by DELL Financial Services in the US. I really hope they get it right this time, so let's wait and see. Delivery for my XPS 17 system is now end of May 2011 by the way.

Regards,

Maarten

Thats terrific I just had a look at the US site and noticed the update..it is a pity that they didnt mention it was AG on the config utility, our british cousins are still waiting hopefully they wont be far away, it must help with these forums providing good customer survey information.  I am glad that it has come through for you and now I feel a little less guilt;y for having this unique privilege LOL

MROSET,  Let us know in this thread exactly what type of screen you get when you get your machine.  I've talked to 3 Dell chat sales reps and they all say the screen in the USA is glossy.  Dell Terry-B also confirmed this to me in an email.  The "help me choose" link states it's an AG screen, but everybody I've talked to told me it's a glossy screen.

They probably should correct the web page if it's not true.

Anyway, I hope they offer a matte screen option in the future.

That is exactly the same as my order I checked

17.3 FHD WLED AG (1920X1080)

My system is being assembled in Malaysia I imagine that it will be the same with yours.

I cant understand what all the drama is about, why wouldnt the best product options be offered to such a large market?

David  - you saved me creating a new post!. I  too am UK based and  interested in purchasing an XPS 17, but have been dismayed at the lack of info regarding its perfomance ( reguar user reviews as opposed to official reviews) in comparison to the wealth of info about the  full HD XPS 15.

A major criticism about the L701X was that the screen resolution wasn't available at 1080p - so it's a no brainer that this be an option with the L702X (without 3D) - or so you'd think.  ALSO the chiclet style keyboard  (backlit = >$$) available as standard in the US, Australia, Germany and wherever else is only available if I purchase the XPS 17 with the i7 processor - ie at a premium.

Not being a gamer I really have no need for a quad core processor (i7 2630QM) -  which from the little infoI can gather  - has problems with constant noise from the fan due to overheating during normal use (ie not gaming), so I prefer to opt for the the i5 2540M XPS.  But I've noticed that this particular i5 option has remained at £799 for the past 2 weeks, whilst the i7 option has now dropped to £799. Is this  truly a good deal?? or is this price engineering in favour for the XPS (i7 2630QM)?? and why??........what's the catch? Am I being cynical?

| can't understand why Dell  insist on the restricted choices when you go to 'personalise your laptop' on the UK site  in comparison to our international cousins -and when, should you choose to upgrade at considerable cost, you eventually find out that this component is not compatible with the laptop!  I feel  sorry for those who have already purchased such goods and at the same time I become increasingly wary about any future purchases from DELL.

DELL....HOW ABOUT:Better QC testing  - so it does what it says on the tin! Greater transparency!  More accessible & knowledgeable customer service  instead of being herded towards the hard sell from the telephone salesman! listening to your customers and not ignoring the UK maket - because we are paying though our noses for your goods! :emotion-37:

Here in the US I just stepped through a test-customization of an XPS 17 system, something I do from time to time as I consider my options for an XPS laptop buy one of these days. Looks like it's now allowing a non-3D config, along with 1080p and Optimus. It's also forcing me to the 3GB Nvidia card instead of a 1GB option (and, compared to last week's self-config run, also forcing me to: i7 from i5, 2 HDs instead of 1, 6GB min RAM instead of 4GB, BluRay... but I digress).

Is this what everyone's been asking for? Personally I'd prefer to bail on 3D while keeping the 17" 1080p screen, so looks like it's finally possible.

Yeah you guys have the option of a Full HD non-3d version in the States that poptentially has optimus and Widi working...BUT NOT IN THE UK-C'mon Dell, give us Brits the same options as everyone else! We do work over here too, we are not just an island of gamers and 3D BluRay viewers!!!

Yeah I had a look at the UK site I can see what you mean..having just been through the process of configuring and purchasing a system I can understand the stress such a large investment of money can bring, there are alot of important decisions that you wont get a second chance with and 2000$ is alot of money you want to feel right about what you are investing in.

I was lucky because I got my system in Australia and had very good options and also found Dell Australia to be very good to deal with.  I felt good about how they handled the transaction and got the impression that they care about getting my business.

I would have felt frustrated in your situation, obviously there are some restrictions with some technology but I get the impression that differnt countries are being run quite independtantly and I dont think that you are getting a fair deal, particularly compared to the very good service and product we received in Australia.

Good luck with it, keep making some noise and hopefully you shall get same treatment we get in Australia, it is a massive market the UK hopefully things should start to come through like in the USA

They're probably just rolling out the new options one major market at a time. Sounds like it'll be in the UK before long.

I think you might be right it is still very new technology and sandy bridge has had some stumbles. There is alot of excitement from this new model, it seems to be coming through the pipeline as you said.

Dell should be pleased that such interest and passion is there about these new systems I know that I am very excited about getting one, despite having a few issues the xps is getting some very good feedback, Dell are very close to ticking all the boxes with this one.
