Notebooks only offer widescreen format, why?

I think Dells notebooks should still offer non-wide screen format, but they do not. Why is this? For many people the wide screen is considered unnecessary because many programs aren't configured to be wide. Also, it changes the weight and size of a laptop. Laptops are meant to be portable. My grandpa recently got a laptop from Dell, but he is weak, so he doesn't carry it around much, and that's what a laptops for. This is because the laptop was too big, it was wide screen. Please start offering normal laptop screens again. Many consider wide screens a waste. But keep offering them if you must. Another friend complained to me about your wide screens as well. Thanks. eric martin

LCD manufacturers have shifted production to wide screens in part because they are cheaper to make - more panels can be cut from a single sheet of glass than with normal aspect screens.

I think the benefits of widescreens are mainly watching widescreen video and having multiple programs open at once next to each other, which I find is the main benefit over standard screens. Dell makes small and light widescreens (XPS M1210 ~4.5 lbs, Inspiron 640m ~5.5 lbs) so weight isn't an issue if you choose the right one. If you're getting a 17" or even a 15.4" widescreen weight can be an issue, but that is the case even if it's not widescreen.
