NVIDIA graphics card not detected

Hi all,

I have a Dell XPS L502X and today, out of the blue, my computer does not detect my nvidia GT 540M graphics card. It was working last night, but today the HDMI out from my laptop would not work with my monitor. I then checked the nvidia control panel, but it throws an error saying that no nvidia graphics cards are detected in my system. The device manager for windows does not list the graphics card, but it does show some unknown device using the PCI bus. I'm not sure if that's my graphics card, but when I try to update the driver, it fails to find one. I've also tried re-installing and updating the nvidia drivers, but again it would not proceed because it could not detect it. If I try to restore the computer from a previous restore point, my computer still cannot detect it. I've also looked at the bios, but I don't see an option for graphics card control. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how do I fix this?

Thanks in advance,

Ronald

Hi Ronald,

I appreciate your technical expertise. I suggest that you shut the system down, remove the battery and disconnect the ac adapter, press and hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds.  Now connect only the ac adapter and wait for 30 seconds and turn on the system. This will drain any residual charge in the capacitors.

Also run diagnostics on the hardware components of the system.  Press and hold the Fn key and power on the computer to launch diagnostics.  You may also refer to the following link:

Let me know if there is any error message.

Hey Sujatha, thanks for the help! I ran the diagnostic test and did not get any error messages. Interestingly, when I rebooted, windows recognized my graphics card and everything works again. Thanks again for the help!
