Precision M6800 Video Driver Upgrade Inquiry

Hello everyone,

Well, I've finally have been able to upgrade from my Vostro 3700. The Vostro was a good system, but it always ran hot. Dell was gracious enough to exchange my system with a Precision M6800. Thus far, I've had GREAT customer service even with the many calls about my Vostro overheating. With this new laptop, I think they finally hit the mark, it is NOWHERE near as hot as the Vostro 3700 on idle and while playing games.

With that being said, I am trying to upgrade my video drivers. There is an Intel 4600 integrated with the Intel Core i5 processor and an AMD FirePro M6100. Both using PowerPlay to manage the graphics adapters. I've already downloaded both the Intel and AMD video drivers from the Dell Support website. There is a warning on the Dell AMD driver page informing that the Intel driver has to be installed first. When I attempt to install the Intel driver, I get the following error message:

"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software."

So, now I have to ask, what else do I need in order to install the newer drivers?

I've also downloaded the Intel website provided drivers and it informs that I need to go through the manufacturer to get the latest drivers.

Any help would be appreciative.

Thank you,

Johnathan

None of this is working for me at all.  Ugghh this is so frustrating.

I have tried the video driver updates and the elimination of the video switching in the bios.  I am running Intel i7 with CAD and this keeps freezing up and hanging after every few key strokes.  Any more ideas or just another laptop?

New laptop sounds so much easier at this point - no time for this.

Thanks!

Although this post is a bit old, I've discovered that further clarification is in order.  Firstly, thank you, ATOMKV, for your extremely helpful and insightful information.  Secondly, upon reloading the OS (or laying a new image on the hard drive) you must first go into F2/System Setup and enable Switchable Graphics in order to have the Intel HD Graphics as an option.  Then install the driver for the Intel graphics first, followed by the add-in card's drivers.  After this, you can disable the Switchable Graphics in F2/System Setup if you prefer.  It appears that the pre-imaged drive already has the Intel Graphics driver/device available and functional from the factory.  However, the Switchable Graphics option may be disabled from the factory also.  Personally, this is what I've found on many of the Mobile Precision Workstations that I've reloaded (upon receiving them from the factory).

There is no such settings in the Bios. I have the latest Bios. I have a i7 core and I know it has graphics built in.

TYPICAL DELL PILE OF JUNK. NO SUPPORT, LIMIT YOUR BIOS SETTINGS.
