Problem with external hard drive

Hello,

I have Inspiron 17R N7110 laptop and my problem is that when i have my usb 3.0 external hard drive connected to my laptop, everything is good until it randomly won't show the files i have there even though, it shows the folders. I have to restart my computer if i want to connect it again and access my files.
I don't know if the problem is with my laptop, external hard drive or the problem just exists between chair and keyboard.

Thank you

Hi dannu589,

To assist you further, could you please confirm if the latest firmware version provided by the external hard drive manufacturer was installed?

Also, have you tested that external drive on another USB 2.0/3.0 ports or on a different computer?

Have you tested the USB 3.0 ports in your system using another type of USB storage device?

Please reply with results.

Thanks for answering

I think there actually isn't a driver for that hard drive - Adata classic CH11

www.adata-group.com/index.php

I tried usb 3.0 port with another device- it worked, but the device was 2.0 because i don't have any other usb 3.0 devices to try with

My external hard drive works fine on my usb 2.0 port

Hi dannu589,

I would like to know if you have updated or reinstalled the USB 3.0 drivers. If you have not reinstalled the drivers, please follow the below mentioned steps to uninstall and reinstall the USB 3.0 drivers:

Disconnect external connected devices from the system.

Click “Start”> type “Device manager” in the search box> press Enter.

In Device manager window expand “Universal Serial Bus Controller”. Right click “Renesas USB 3.0 host controller” and click “Uninstall”. Ensure to check the box “Delete driver software for this device”. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstallation and restart the system.

Use this link: http://intel.ly/vk7b7r to download and install the latest version of Renesas Electronics USB 3.0 Driver.

Click “Download”, follow the onscreen instructions and install the drivers.

Now connect the external hard drive to a USB 3.0 port and try to access the files.

Thanks again, but the problem still occurs - everything is perfect, till it randomly says that files are not located in this location.

Maybe the problem is that my external hard drive does not get enough power from my laptop or there's something wrong with the cable?

Hi dannu589,

Please disconnect the External harddrive from the system and from the above image of Device manager I suggest you to right click USB Root Hub and uninstall both the USB Root Hubs and restart the system. Connect the External harddrive and check.

If the issue persists, I suggest you to connect any other USB 3.0 storage device to the USB 3.0 port on the laptop and check. This helps us in isolating the
problem between External harddrive and the USB 3.0 port.

Please post the results.
