Problem with Microphone on Inspiron 1721

Hello,
I have an Inspiron 1721.
I bought this notebook with Windows Vista.
I desinstall Vista and I REPLACE IT with windows XP + service Pack2.
The First Problems that I found there are no Drivers for sound and For Graphic card.
since August 2007 I have tried to resolve this problem.
Last week jim tell me a solution that uses XP drives of Notebook 6400.
the video drives and sound drives had solved my graphic and audio Problem [think you jim I tried to reply to your last post but unfortunately I didn't find my message , it was deleted !!!!!].
The second Problem was about the bluetooth drivers, i searched in the dellcommunity and I found a link for  the bluetooth RFCOMM.
the problem now is that i can't test my microphone it didn't  work.
Please help.
there is another problem , in the Peripheric Manager I always have 4 Peripheric  with a yellow question mark next to them [3 system peripheric + 1 network controller].
can someone tell me what are these peripherics.
Think you in advance for your Help

Yamen,

I also tried to reply to your last post and likewise found it deleted. I have saved my reply and will paste it here.

"I must use [Dell Notebook System Software ] for Inspiron 1721 or this of [Latitude D531]"

"Is there a différence between [AMD processor driver ] of Inspiron 1721 and [Latitude D531]"

The answer to both questions is that Dell is not currently offering XP versions of the AMD processor driver or NSS for your 1721, as you can see here:
Inspron 1721 XP downloads

Because they do not exist you can't use NSS for 1721 and you can't compare 1721 AMD processor driver to that of the D531.

Remember that I wrote that the NSS for the D531 didn't work for anothers' Inspiron 1721, but despite that the Sigmatel did work. On some of the Dell notebooks the NSS is not too important, and on others it is important. But it is always important to install the AMD processor driver.

"the Audio drive that i found is not [the Sigmatel R153908] but its name was [R171789.exe]."

Thanks for pointing that out. When I pasted in the instructions in my reply to you on November 30, the R153908 was the only Sigmatel driver for the D531. Then last week on December 4 Dell released a new Sigmatel driver, thus making the R153908 an older version and no longer the current version.

To find it now, go back to the R171789 page and click on 'Other Versions' right underneath the words 'Download Now'. Do use the R153908 because it is the one that has worked for others. If you can get your audio to work with it then you can consider trying to upgrade to the newer version.

I am quite happy to hear that your audio is now working. The mic not be working because the substitute Sigmatel driver you had to install doesn't support it, or because it is not turned on, or because you need additional drivers. I'm not sure.

"The second Problem was about the bluetooth drivers, i searched in the dellcommunity and I found a link for the bluetooth RFCOMM.
the problem now is that i can't test my microphone it didn't work."

Is it a bluetooth microphone? To get external audio devices to work, sometimes you have to go into your Audio Properties for recording and look in the dropdown box for 'default device' and select your external device to be the default.

Regarding the yellow question marks in your Device Manager, you probably either need to download more drivers, or the SMBus Chipset driver, or both. I don't know what those devices are, but I would start with the SMBus chipset because the other drivers might be dependent on it. Here is the link again to obtain these drivers

And Finally , my Mic works.
the Problem is that I can't hear  my voice through intern speaker of my Inspiron 1721.
The install of R134875.EXE (smbus drivers don't delete any yellow question mark in the device manager).
I install the wireless drivers (of D531 the name of exe file is R151517.EXE) ==> my WiFi is OK .

Now in the device manager , Ihave only 3 devices with yellow question mark (in properties the emplacement was Bus PCI 3, périphérique 1, fonction 3(sorry it's in French).

I bielieve  that was the webcam , really it still not work.
the webcam Manager tell me that there is no drivers for the webcam.
I can't find these drivers in the cd of Webcam (may be the drivers are for vista).

/*
when you plug in the headset do you see on the screen a popup box asking whether you plugged in a mic or line-in device */

Yamen,

Sorry for the delay. These problems are hard to unravel because you are now using drivers that were not intended for your computer and it is hard to know if the WebCam is not working because you lack the correct driver or because the drivers from the D531 are not sufficient.

==================================================================
==================================================================

About your external microphone, when you plug in the headset do you see on the screen a popup box asking whether you plugged in a mic or line-in device? If not, go to Start/Control Panel/ Sigmatel and check the 'allow popups' box. Then plug in the mic again and test it. I'd test it with a recording program such as Windows Sound Recorder.

==============================================================

Open Windows Sound Recorder under Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment.

Click on the Edit menu, then on Audio Properties.

Click on 'Volume' under 'Sound Recording' (not Sound Playback).

Click on the 'Select' box underneath the 'Microphone' control.

Push the mic volume slider all the way up.

Click on 'Advanced' under the microphone select box. Check the mic boost box.

Now you are configured for mic recording. Close all of the windows boxes except Windows Sound Recorder.

Click on the red Record button and then speak into the mic. If the green line moves then the mic is working. To hear the recording click on stop and then the 1st arrow to go back to the beginning. Click play.

Yamen,

So far so good!

=========================================================

"the Problem is that I can't hear my voice through intern speaker of my Inspiron 1721."

link

Look at the 2nd set of instructions , for models with XP and Sigmatel
92xxHD.

==============================================================

I don't know a lot about the Webcam. I found these drivers for the 1721 and XP:

Creative Labs Webcam Driver R155105

Creative Labs Webcam Driver R165116 <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

===============================================================

Theere is also this Webcam Manager, but it ia a program, not a driver:

Creative Labs Webcam Manager

jim,

Think you again for your Reply,

I saw the link that you posted about the problem of MIC ( I will test all the instructions this night and I will tell you if that works .

Think you also for for the two  url of webcam's drivers.

I will test them and I will tell you if one of them resolve the Problem.

Really Now ,I have only 3 Devices with Yellow questions Mark (may be one of them is for webcam).

If I find these drivers for these Devices I will be full satisfied by the dellCOmmunity Forum and not by the service of dell.
Remark : For the last Link that you told me it's the software of webcamManager (this soft Resolve the problem in Vista (I'm not sure) but not in XP ).
Infact it'd the same soft that I had in CDs with my Inspiron.
I desinstall the software that I had in CD and I reinstall  this of link ===> the problem Still persist.

I will try Drivers that you send and I will told you the result
Think You , Have a nice Day.
