***Processor Start Failure*** (on C600)

You have the wrong version of the C600 MB for that C600 CPU. The person who sold it to you made a general statement that since it a C600 MB it must support all the CPU’s ever shipped on a C600, which is untrue, that MB was made for the earlier CPU’s in a C600 :-)

i am getting the same exact message on my Inspiron 4000. I installed a new motherboard (from Dell) and when it didnt work, and I called Dell, they told me I needed a new processor. Bought the new processor (from Dell) and now this error. Does this mean that they sold me the wrong motherboard, and now I need to buy yet another???

It is really difficult to get hold of any information from anywhere. The person (on ebay) who sold the motherboard to me claiming it to be compatible with up to a PIII 1GHz doesn’t reply to any e-mails (what a surprise). From my research on various websites I figure one has to identify the system chipset on the motherboard (according to my information the C600/C500 was supplied with a 440BX AGPset (only). From this one should be able to figure which processor is supported. What I would like to find out is whether upgrading the bios may help (as suggested in the previous posting on this subject)? Also which processors have been available in a C600?

The chipset did not change at all during the c600's life.

I verified with Dell tech support today that their are indeed 2 versions of the motherboard, just as Jason said. Obviously the one that we have is not the one that supports the 1ghz processor.

Have tried an 850 still the same message.

I'm guessing anything below 1ghz. But I am not 100% sure.

I have tried to upgrade 6x Dell Latitude C600 (same mobo as I4000) notebooks  today. There are two different hardware revisions: A07 and A08.  I can't get an SL5* processor faster than 750Mhz to work in any of them.....but one!!!  It's an A07 hardware revision, and the difference is that the screen printing on the mainboard is YELLOW rather than white. In the centre of the mainboard it has a marking like two chain links crossed and some numbers. The white boards are marked NM4, the Yellow board in NM5. Both have 94V-0 underneath this.  The Mainboards look identical other than this feature.  I have successfully put a SL5* 1GHz CPU in "NM5" mainboard.
