re enable graphics adapter / monitor on DELL inspiron 1010 (mini 10) running Windows XP sp3

I was attempting to connect 2nd monitor and downloaded and installed driver updates for Intel graphics media accelerator 500. (Intel Driver graphics media v.6.14.10.1098 A01)

Attached HDTV using hdmi to hdmi cable between TV and Computer. (trying to attach to VGA monitor never worked...faulty cable?)

Connection worked but resolution was not good.

In attempt to adjust settings, both the graphics adapter and the monitor were disabled.

At first I thought something was fried when no screen came up after the Windows logo/loading screen on laptop.

Then, after another reboot, I pressed 'enter' as if I could see the log on screen which asks for password. (no password) and could then HEAR the completion of Windows loading along with accompanying blips and chimes to indicate normal loading was accomplished, minus the monitor.

I've attempted to boot from Windows install disk in SAFE MODE w/command prompt but no luck.

I can enter  recovery mode w/command prompt which will not allow any executables to run.

How may I re-enable the disabled graphics adapter and disabled monitor? Must Windows XP sp3 be reinstalled? or is there a more straightforward COMMAND MODE way to fix?

Hopefully ,

I used the f8 key to safe boot and reach the command prompt. It is there that I'm at a loss as to which file to re-enable.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I did the same exact thing. I feel so silly.  My laptop has been sitting there for over a year because I cannot figure out how to re-enable the monitor!  HELP!!! I'm sure theres a simple solution...
