Registry cannot load hive file
Inspiron 1100 running XP professional.
Problem: Unable to boot and error message 'Registry cannot load hive (File)' appears.
Reasons for the problem:
Prior to the error message I connected an external monitor and was having a little problem with connection, even while cycling thruogh the crt/lcd mode (Fn F8 button).
Also I had put the laptop onto a small cabinet which turns out to be a speaker for the local audio.
I am thinking that I might have damaged the Hard disk (magnetic field from speaker) but thought all units were shielded.
Questions:
1. When I boot with the operating CD (via the F12 Boot sequence) my choices are to recover functionality with the recovery console or re-install windows xp.
When I choose Recovery Console I am asked to log on to the windows installation
I do not know the administrator password......
Since purchasing the laptop 11 months ago I have not setup an administrator password, so is their a default?
I can not proceed any further.
2. I do not want to re-install XP operating system unless that is the final option.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards

I have seen this before. Your current install is so messed up that the XP install program doesn't even see it and doesn't give you the option jto do a repair. Sorry bu in my opinion it's time to wipe the drive and start fresh.
One big thing you want to look at. Files do NOT just get corrupted or go missing for NO reason. So I would think you have some type of hardware problem and you should run the Dell diagnostic program and check all the hardware and also run the HDD makers utility to check the drive.

Thanks for your prompt reply, however I do not get the option to repair.
After accepting the license agreement I get the following:
The following list shows the existing partions and unpartioned space on this computer.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select an item in the list
28616 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
-: Partition 1 [FAT] 47MB < 40 MB free >
C: Partition 2 [NTFS] 28561MB < 23403MB free >
unpartitioned space 8MB
