Sound not working properly through HeadPhone socket

Question

Hello   Today I've noticed that the sound coming through the headphone socket at the side of my Inspiron 9100 is not producing all the sounds.   Eg with an MP3 I can hear the backing musing, but not the singing (singing is very very faint)   When I remove the headphones the sound, out of the built in speakers is fine.   Any ideas?

turn of the volume or getting different headphones?  try a software equalizer

Ur problem is the headphone jack on ur 9100.  This is an all too common problem on the 9100.  The headphone jack is part of the F2 fan assembly and that whole module will need to be replaced.  U can send it to Dell, or if u feel competent, swap it urself, it is very simple.  Just 3 screws.  Call tech support, describe ur problem and tell them that it is the headphone jack and that u need a new F2 fan assembly.  They may very well try to tell u it may be the motherboard or something else---stand ur ground!  It is this part that u need!!!!  Search the boards (9100 headphone as search words), u'll see.

Yeah I know it's not going to be the motherboard. so if I call them, they will send me the part to install myself, as I don't really want to have to send my laptop off.

Cheers for the help, it was the F2 Fan Assembly, I had a long, long email discussion with them about it and thay have sent me through the assembly and it is all working ok now.   Cheers again.   Kedge
