speaker icon and control missing from taskbar

On Monday my D800 had a substantial crash and I couldn't boot up.  I was able to get good technical support (thank you thank you thank you Dell) and using one of the original Dell CD's we were able to boot the computer up, run chkdsk, do the diagnostics and an invisible but effective repair.  But today I needed to adjust my volume (actually turn it on) and the speaker icon on my taskbar was missing, gone, nada.  I went to the Sound and Audio Devices section and checked the "Place volume icon in the taskbar notification area' check box...then 'apply'.  The box checks but no matter what I do the check isn't saved and no speaker or volume control appears on my taskbar.  I even reinstalled Dell Quickset but that didn't help either.

I'm wondering what other taskbar goodies I'm missing but for now the one that's important is the volume control.  I can turn the volume on by manually unchecking the mute button via the software but I'd really like my little speaker back.

Any clues?  Thanks for your help and thanks Dell for the great rescue earlier in the week

AndrewM,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
The next logical step would be to try and reload your Audio drivers.
If that does not work and you are using WinXP, you may want to try the SFC utility to check for
corrupt files.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Information:
To try and fix problems with Windows corrupt files, please try using Windows SFC.

Solution:
1.) Put your WindowsXP reinstall CD in the system.
2.) Click Start, Run.
3.) Type in ( SFC /Scannow )
4.) Click OK, and the system will start checking the system files.
5.) If any errors are found the system will prompt you to replace these files.
