ST1747: 7x Bios beeps - Core i7 throttling - too less A/C adapter
more and more ST1747 users reports about reducted clock rates of their Intel Core i7, if similary their graphics adapter (ATI HD4650) is under heavy load! But the worse is yet to come, some Core i7 quits working, 7x Bios Beep, Game over, sudden death of the CPU! :emotion-45:
Update: the 7x Beep issue seems to be fixed since Bios A06!
UPDATE 03.2010: STILL OPEN ISSUES OF STUDIO 1747 / BIOS A07
if you have more suggestions for this list, don´t hasitate to inform/contact me!
►Core i7 Throttling
under simultaneous full load of CPU and GPU, Core i7 CPU throttles down to averaged 4x 1100 - 1400 MHz
►Performance between battery and AC power
most Studios runs with a bit more performance if only battery is connected
►Hot 90 watt a/c adapters
under fully load, the serially 90 watt adapter seems to work at/above its performance limit - temperatures over 70°C are not acceptable call your local Dell support for a free 130 watt adapter.
►Problems resuming from sleep and/or hibernate
if the 1747 "sleeps" more than 30-60 minutes it´s possible that it don´t resume anymore but turn it off&on "hard" by holding power-button
►Problems with playing FullHD-Streams
freezing/jerking, max. loaded and almost non-responding Studios if playing a FullHD-stream, e.g. Youtube possible solution, please look here. New Dell ATI driver in progress.
►Permanent running fan
fan starts causeless running at increased speed shortly after turning the 1747 on. Fan keeps blowing at increased speed, even if Windows boots all over and CPU idles - because of the still-blowing fan only at ~32° C. You can stop the fan only with a reboot or by stressing CPU - if temperature reaches 48°+C, fan slows down to lowest level. Turn off stress test, temperature drops below 48°C, fan turns off then. Confirmed by several users. 4 new users reported me this curious issue in the last few days!
►Too less temperature range for fan
fan needs an extended temperature range in office mode. At the moment fan turns on at ~53°C and off at ~48°C. That causes the fan to start&stop every 10-15 seconds, very bothering
►Cutted sound
If the IDT sound "idles" for a while and you play then any sound, the first ~0.5 seconds are cutted! This happens only one time, following sounds are played correctly! If you stop and wait a few minutes, the next sound after this idle time is cutted again
►Not enough power to USB ports and Firewire
There are pages upon pages of various users all experiencing the same issues.
take also a l@@k at German Studio 1747 FAQ @ Hardware Luxx forum | sorry for my rookie englisch! ^^

those of you in the US, you should look up the term "implied warranty of merchantability"

Thanks! Going to go by your and the other person's post about motherboard replacement and call in to get it swapped.

Let me know how that goes! I am probably going to follow suit, I am absolutely sick of having to hard reset my machine and all the work I have lost as a result. From all the people talking about their boards being fixed resolving the problem is really starting to lead me to think there was a bad hardware run.
But, there is a catch-22.
I cant afford to send the machine away and wait for a fix, this computer in a sense, is my (professional)life, not to mention I have a ton of proprietary code that is the lifeblood of what I do and no way in hell I am going to mail the machine away without purging the drives.... so....
Will Dell do onsite support in Canada? I know with pro support its onsite, but I am thinking for consumers, that isn't the case. Second, I refuse to call India again, I can't take the gray hairs it generated last time I called there! Can anyone give me a valid canadian support number, I don't even care if its not toll free.
Oh, and Dell, you really should fire whatever call center you sourced to in India. I have actually had some pretty good customer service in outsourced call centers. That said, yours was not one such experience!

Wait a minute, you had a replacement 130w PSU by DELL? :emotion-3: for free? May I ask you if you are from Germany? Beacause, so far, that's where I know Dell allowed this PSU replacement to several users: is that true?
Why shouldn't Dell apply this policy to all users if they did already to some? :emotion-40:
That sure implies that Dell admits the real problem, tracing the way to really solve it !

So there is a legal term to describe what we are all coming to realize. Excellent!
Ah, but we wouldn't want to start throwing out terms like "implied warranty of merchantability" to destract us from the "Real world senarios"

I have had my Studio 1747 since Dec 2009 and I am having some of the same problems. USB port unstable, HD Movies (YOU TUBE exp. lock and crash), and a few times lock up or just shut dowm. I tried a fresh reload of windows diff drivers and no difference. Is there a way to put bios A06 back after installing A07 it seemed to be a little more stable.

it seems that NO, you cannot downgrade bios... you just have to wait a new-hypothetical-potentialy-fixing-all-the-issues-bios.
by the way bill and todd, IF that bios does not come, or IF it comes (eventualy with it's little brothers. 1747 bioses are a big family now) and does NOT solve the crash of the ATI adapter when watching DVB-T, and the freezes, and some other big issues, I can assure you that :
A) I will start loosing patience, and thus have dell replace the graphic card. And change it again. and again... Because I KNOW how to reproduce the bug I'm facing, and your wonderfull high tech test center seems NOT to have been able to plug in a single dvb adapter (although there is an option for that when buying the st17)
B) being let with a crashing computer / or a battery drawing on (chose the one you want by enabling/disabling ati powerplay), I will never EVER buy ANYTHING from dell, and so will my family and my friends I hope.

After reading nearly all posts here and on the german forum, I would recommend some guys here to take a break a chill a bit. Neither does it help to loose patience nor does it help to be agressiv.
As far as Dell is concerned, I am pretty sure that they will come up with a solution. Obviously they need to make sure, if they can fix it by issuing 130W AC adaptors + new BIOS or if there is a more economical solution. Especially with budgets that thight this year, they dont want to waste money.
Beside that throtteling issue, I need to add my 1747 (produced Jan. 2010, shipped to Austria) having issues:
*eSATA not working properly
*Windows Mobile USB connection not working reliable
*Sporadic lock-ups
Luckily I dont have any problems while watching 1080p content (youtube, local files).

the question is how long to chill... they had a lot of time and seven bios versions didnt change anything ( ok maybe the 7 beep problem has been solved until now )... and that makes aggressiv
and I also dont want to waste my money, so i would have prefered it to pay more money for a working laptop than save a bit of money and getting a "banana" product... but i have the feeling that i wasted money with buying this laptop...

I think it may be time to start filing claims/complaints with the BBB and FTC. This is ridiculous. No one should pay this much money for a product and get treated like this. Bill/Todd, where are you??? You said we would be seeing much more of you?!?! Light a fire under those engineers --- and let's fix these problems. I feel your customer base has been pretty patient with Dell thus far, but that is starting to slip away as you can tell from the tone on this board over this past week. LET'S GET THIS FIXED!!

Is far superior in design and quality. The service would also be better as the system is considered med - high end. If you get a Studio / Inspiron, you tend not to register with Engineers, etc. Search back in this thread and you'll see that Dell just jumped all over the XPS version of this unit and they got their 300 watt adapters ASAP. Go with Studio and you'll be waiting forever. I envy you on this, my system died and they didn't give me any say or choice in the matter. They shipped me the the 1747 and it's been a rough one. I do a lot of gaming (World of Warcraft mainly) and it is uncomfortably hot (beyond noticable) next to the touchpad when your hand is resting at the ASDW keys. Sadly, I'm not using this machine anywhere as much as I used my old system.

If you go back a couple pages you'll see that I posted a few replies to this thread yesterday. We are pushing to get this issue resolved and I hope to have additional information shortly. It does take time and we do wish that it were quicker but everyone, from the engineers to marketing to management are looking at this issue and trying to get it resolved as quickly as possible.

the notebook is also very very hot UNDER the touchpad when u re gaming / using 3d programs ... maybe next days i will make a temp measure .. i called dell supp tech because of this issue but they couldnt tell me if that is normal or not... i think the plastic has to melt down before dell is doing something...

Mine also gets very hot under the touchpad even when I just surf the web / talk on skype. In fact, this appears to be the hottest spot of the PC. I suppose, this is simply a design issue and nothing can be done about it.
