Studio 1535 Problem!

Every so often, the touch-button that raises volume becomes "stuck". I can only temporarily get rid of the problem by shutting down the computer. After I turn the computer back on, it makes a very loud beeping noise then proceeds to work, for the most part, normally. Also, my mouse stops every so often in the middle of moving it. Please help! I don't want to have to send my laptop in if this is fixable.

Thanks for all of your help.

In case it matters, I'm running Vista Home Premium on my Dell Studio 1535. I'm fairly certain I have all the BIOS and the drivers updated.

A Dell service technician came to my home yesterday and replaced the hinge cover on my 2 new studio laptops (that is the plastic cover that contains the media control buttons, ie, volume up, volume down, eject, etc.).  He said it is a fairly widespread issue, apparently, the wires and/or connection on the underside of the cover were faulty.  Anyway, booted up both laptops several times and it appears the problem has been resolved.  So, for all of you with the ringing at start up problem, up volume button stuck on, eject button stuck on, this is the fix.  You need to have Dell send a service technician to your home/business to replace the hinge cover, or, if you are able, they could send you the replacement cover and you could do it yourself.  I watched the technician do the work, it is a bit complicated.  THIS IS THE FIX.  IF I HAVE ANY FURTHER ISSUES WITH THIS OR OTHER, I WILL POST BACK HERE.  GOOD LUCK!

So far I have not had a problem- it may actually be fixed.  It's always hard to tell when the problem is intermittent to begin with.

I dont know what Dell plans to do about distributing the fix, or if they will re-package it to make it more user-friendly.  The version they gave me was very brief, required burning my own CD and was chock full of debug messages.

Like I said I will try to let everyone know that details as the progresses and I will post a download link if possible.

-My guess is that dell will continue to re-post their "solution" to either remove the battery or to call for a technician.

Yes,

Download the firmware ISO I posted a while back.  Here is the URL:

http://jacobbaron.net/files/FW7_X0D.ISO

1) Burn to CD/DVD

2) Boot from that disk you burned to reflash the firware drivers for the media panel

3) Shutdown

4) Remove battery and power cable, then hold power button for 30 seconds

5) reinstall battery and power cable, power up

-Follow these steps and you will never have another problem with it.  No disassembly, tape, or soldering required.

I have the exact same problem on a Studio 1536. The touch-button volume light comes on and gets stuck. Upon reboot, the computer beeps continually for about 30 seconds. The other day, I got "Error Code 2000-0141 No Drive Detected" and it wouldn't boot at all. Have you had this yet? After a few reboots, it was back to normal, but I am very suspicious. Dell's suggestion was that static electricity was the cause and that I should remove the power cord, the battery and all USB connections and then re-insert. I did that today so I don't know whether it will fix the issue or not. I'm dubious about whether it will work, to be honest. I've seen other similar issues online and all evidence points to a faulty hard drive that will fail permanently sooner or later. It will then need to be replaced.

Make sure your entire system is backed up to an external media in case the worst happens. If you have any more info on this issue, please post here or email me.

For some reason, the issue has resolved itself. I didn't do anything to fix it. Though I did leave the laptop unplugged of everything overnight. That might've helped it out.

For me it has been an intermittent problem, occuring once a week or once every two weeks. Let me know if it happens again.

I was told by Dell that it could be static electricity which caused the problem. They told me to unplug everything (battery, AC mains, USB, everything) leave for a while and plug in again. That was about a week ago and it hasn't happened again yet, but it was always an intermittent problem anyway. I am expecting the hard drive to fail again. If it does, I will be asking Dell for an immediate replacement.

Back up all your  vital data. Your hard drive may fail any day. Please post here with any info you have on the issue, or anything you've noticed.

By the way, does the volume up button on the touchpad come on when the drive fails to boot?

I haven't really found any issues with it other than this... minor annoyance. My hard drive is fine and I don't have anything of dire importance on it, but I'll take your advice and backup what I have.

I've found that after closing the lid and opening it up again, the eject button is lit up instead of the volume up button.

Hi, I have the same problem with my studio 1537! it must be a studio problem - I've emailed technical support but if this happens a lot surely its more than static? I unplug my laptop every night and i get this issue almost every time I watch a DVD - I can't adjust the sound using the little touch volume button without the computer having a spaz - sorry that's not very technical lol. I find I need to reboot my computer alomost evertime.  Oftern the eject touch button doesnt work either.  I wondered if it was something to do with Vista and Win Media Centre as the volume buttons work fine when watching youtube or similar web-based video.

I'll let you know what technical supoort say :)

Cheers
Zaral

Hi everyone,

Guess what ... I'm another person with the exact same problem with my Studio 1535. At least I don't feel alone anymore.

I just contacted tech support and they updated my BIOS, chipset & quickset drivers.

I'll let you know if it helped.

I can't believe they haven't identified the problem if so many of us are reporting it.

Zaral, if it's happening every day, then it must be more serious. It sounds like the hard drive might fail. Any word from the Dell support service yet?

Timbo_aus, sorry to hear it wasn't resolved. It must be a hardware issue, right?

Everyone, please keep posting here and we will eventually get to the bottom of the problem. Although I haven't had any failures since last week, i noticed that sometimes the volume up touchpad light comes on and goes off at random times. Since that is the same button that comes on when the computer fails to boot, I'm inclined to think there's a connection. I still think there is some kind of problem just waiting to happen.

I've finally has success in getting Dell to admit it's been a know problem.

They believed it was rectified by the BIOS update ... the one they loaded on my computer today. But like I said, I still got the problem.

Yes ... that button lights up on mine intermittantly and randomly while I'm working, as well as the disastrous one on booting.

On 2 occasions I've also had the eject button light up of it's own accord ... and one of those occasions was on booting too.

There's also 2 other discussions I found regarding this matter. One is on this Dell community site and is titled "Studio 1535 not booting properly"

The other one discusses a similar problem with the Studio 1535, but involving the 'eject' button. I reckon it all stems from the same root problem:   http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=286942
