Studio 1558 Battery Charging Issues

So I bought my Studio 1558 in May of 2010, and about 2 1/2 months ago I got a message saying that my battery was past it's optimal performance.  Within the next two weeks, my computer was left completely unable to charge my battery, yet still run my laptop.  Thinking it was the charger that was the issue, I borrowed friends chargers but none of them worked to charge the battery either, so I thought it was a battery issue.  After ordering and receiving a new battery from the internet, the new battery would not charge either.  I have engineering friends who suggest somehow that the charging port is broken to the point that it will deliver power to the computer, but the connection that would charge the battery is broken.

If anyone has any experience with this it would be appreciated to know before I tear open the laptop and put it at further risk of not running at all.

Yes, the cause is very likely the power jack  -- it's easily replaced on this model (see below).  IF that does not solve the problem, replace the mainboard.

there is the power plug

Do you have another dell power adapter? even if your system came with a 90W adaper, you can still use a 65W adapter to see if the problem goes away. The system will complain about running slowly but it will run and charge the battery on 65W. I have the same system with ATi graphics and it runs on 65W adapter (I used one when I left mine at home).
