Studio 1737 DPC Latency

Hello! My Studio 1737 is showing the DPC Latency problems described as in this thread: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19245700/19411542.aspx

Symptoms include periodic crackle and popping sounds during audio playback. The problem is most severe with wireless broadband enabled and disabling it greatly helps but does not completely solve the problem.

Research on the web shows this is a fairly widespread problem known to affect Studio laptops, and that BIOS upgrades have resolved the problem for other computers including Dell's XPS line.

So I'm hoping this will be fixed soon. Has anyone been able to get information from Dell support about whether this will be fixed with a BIOS update for the 1737?

Cheers,

-Andy

Bill, does the XPS series have this problem and is it a hardware or software issue or both?  If its a hardware issue, I'm screwed as my return date just expired. I like the Studio 1737, but it does not suit my use for recording.  Low latency is more important to me than wireless or any other feature.   I do not have this issue with the Studio Slim-Tower I also purchased last month so I'm thinking its a hardware problem.

It is not hardware related, as evidenced in previous posts regarding Hackintoshing it and acpi.sys workarounds. We are investigating, and as stated in my last update, we're looking at the BIOS and a couple of WLAN drivers.

While we are waiting for the bios update, is there a workaround for those of us using Windows 7 Ultimate beta?  I tried using Process Hacker to stop ACPI.sys, but it won't allow me to!

Count me in on this issue as well!  I have a Presonus Firebox that is crackling on my new Studio 1737!  I've been frustrated and trying to get this worked out the whole week, now I am elated to find this thread and see that Bill and the folks at Dell are doing thier best to get this issue solved!!  I'll volunteer to beta test too!

Hello, all.

I have assumed a new role at Dell. I am still watching this issue and following up internally. When I get updates, I will forward them to the new Liaisons covering the laptop boards, Dell-Richard B and Dell-Brad L. Please refer direct questions and PM's to the new Liaisons.

Bill B,

Until now, I've been silently following this thread.  It now sounds like you won't be posting any further updates regarding progress on the BIOS updates.:emotion-6:  I do hope the new Liaisons are as responsible and responsive as you were.  You will be missed!  Wish you much success in your new role.

Anybody got any news on the bios update?  I finally figured out how to use the workarounds in vista and windows 7. It's not a huge deal for me to do it, but is it harmful to my Studio 1737 to suspend acpi.sys?   Good luck on all of your future endeavors, Bill!

Hi, guys. Thanks for the kind words.

This issue is so complex from a logistical standpoint that I can't really totally transition it to Robert and Richard. I'm looping them in and keeping them updated whenever anything happens. If there's anything that needs to be posted in regards to an update, one of the three of us will post it. Hang in there. I can tell you the frequency of internal emails and conference calls  has picked up this week. Something's gotta give.

Hi Bill,

Congrats on the promotion. My question is will the new Bios update continue to eliminate the latency issue if I upgrade to Windows 7? I have Vista Home Premium 64 bit and wanted to use the free upgrade to Win 7 home premium 64 bit. Unless the upgrade modifies the Bios in some way I would assume the latency issue would stay resolved but I am not a software engineer so I though I would ask. Thanks Bill!

Thanks, Starriddin.

I'm pretty sure a new BIOS release would have the same affect on latency in 7 as it will in Vista or XP. I do know from the internal emails flying around that the engineers are doing root cause analysis in 7, XP and Vista.

After thinking this whole thing over some more, I've decided to just stick with this issue until it's fixed. It's just too many internal points of contact to tie together to dump it in the new guys' laps. So, you're not shed of me just yet. Will let you know if anything changes on that front.

Glad I spotted this, was about to say how doomed I imagined the prospect of a solution to this being without you on the case...

I'm surprised how long it has taken so far since the problem was properly acknowledged without any cast iron progress. Perhaps ther are some people beta testing as i type, but I just get the feeling its still not in the pipeline or if it is, its still well stuck at the other end. This isn't a criticism of you, and I'm still gratefull for your advice to send my laptops back rather than wait it out. I'd have been more than a little miffed by now!

Hope a solution still gets there for all those waiting.

Lastly, do you or anyone else have confirmation of wether the new i7 version of this laptop also has the DCP latency fault?

Hi Bill

I have a Studrio XPS 1640 with 6GB of RAM memory, a 7200 rpm hard disk and everything 40 days ago ... it's a jet. ... But with high latency.

I've found this message and I'm glad to know that you are working on it. When are you planning to release the new BIOS? I'm looking forward to have it.

With best regards

Matías

For the 1640, you should be latency free with the latest Dell web posted BIOS and the latest Dell web posted ATI drivers. Update both of those and post back if you still have a latency problem.
