studio 1749 fan noise/temperature problems

Hey guys,

I've recently received my dell studio 1749 laptop with the following specs,

- i5 CPU 520m

- 4 gigs of RAM

- Intel HD graphics

- 320 gig HD

The problem with this laptop is that the fan will start to whine every few minutes seemly without reason.

I've done some investigation and found out the following:

- there seems be a threshold of 35 to 36 degrees celsius. Once the CPU hits that temperature, the fan will start to cool it down to under 30 degrees

- the idle temperature of the CPU is always creeping up, even without load.  If I leave the computer alone at idle with almost no CPU activity, the temperature will creep up to the threshold...thus triggering fan.

the cycle repeats itself every few minutes.

I've attached a picture to illustrate the problem.

I've attached a picture to illustrate the problem.

Since this is my first laptop, I want to ask does the CPU temperature stay constant during idle? or does it creep up like mine?

Can the threshold be modified?

Is this normal with the dell studio?

With the fan whining every few minutes, it can get very annoying.

If anyone has this problem/has a fix, please let me know.

Thanks

From what I understand, the i7-620m is closer to a i5-540m rather than a i7-720QM, and i mean it in a good way.

Like the i5, it has two actual cores, 32nm, 35W TDP... Although the i7-720QM is certainly more powerful, it consumes a lot of energy, and produces much heat, due to its older architecture. Even though the i7-720QM seems to be doing great in laptops from other brands, I have heard terrible complaints on the studio 17 with it, because of the throttling and heat.

I have the Studio 1558 with i5-430M and have this problem too. It's tolerable only when I have headphones on, otherwise, it's incredibly annoying. And I've only been using this laptop for 2 days now. So I'm probably going to return this before my 30-days is up unless a new BIOS update comes out.

Really interesting findings anyway, i hope some others will test and fine the same results.

Does this mean the bios theory is wrong? If W7 is to blame, why doesn't it happen on all laptops? The bios has to be a part of the equation at some point no?

Hello,

it's definitely not correct to say, that under ubuntu 10.04 the fan doesn't stuck. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on my Stuido 17" for nearly two month and the fan got stuck a few times. BUT (!!!) it seems to me that it happens much less than under windows 7.

For me, it still seems to be an bios issue.

Dell has just released a new bios update for the 1764 inspiron series... I've just installed it and I think it does solve the problem of the fan getting stuck or  on/off behaviour but not 100 % sure yet. Probably good idea to check if has been released for the other series as well!

I just bought a Dell Studio 1749 (6/2/2010) and it has the maddening fan problem.

I have tinnitus and the sound is very annoying.  Otherwise this a a good product.

DELL, Please fix this problem.  This is intolerable.

My fix is to put a blue ice gel pack under the laptop.  This keeps the laptop cooler and is an improvement.  The ice pack is inside a plastic ziploc bag to stop moisture from condensation.  I think it's sad that I have to resort to this.

How did this get past quality assurance?

So what is the verdict??  Does the updated Bios fix the problem.  I am looking to get this configuration for myself and others in my family and I would hate to have to deal with an excessively loud fan..

Thanks!

The bios released in early may was never supposed to fix the fan management.

And the fan isn't that loud either, the sound is not directly annoying. It's the fact that it's ON/OFF with no in between.

You will almost have no real issues if you do nothing heavy with this computer, and the opposite is true also: if all you do is gaming you will be fine because the fan will have to work at fullspeed.

I updated to A04 Bios. The problem is not solved.

Not related to this update as It happened a week or so later - my fan is on all the time - even under no load. What is going on ?

A04 bios did nothing. Have you asked to return the laptop for a refund or for a service ? Mine is still under warranty and the yhave asked me to return. Want to know if anyone has actually had any success fixing this problem through Dell ?

I've had the same fan problem with my Studio 17 laptop (1749 with i5 processor & ATI graphics).

Even when the laptop is not running any programmes, as soon as the CPU temp creeps above around 35 degrees, the fan kicks in for a few seconds then switches off again and the cycle repeats itself.  Sometimes it seems to get really confused and turn the fan on and off or vary the speed several times within the space of a few seconds.
The fan has occasionally stuck as well though running a more CPU intensive application (like watching a video full screen) usually resolves this problem.

A Dell engineer came out last week to replace the fan & heatsink which didn't resolve the problem.

This week they replaced the motherboard (twice as the first one was DOA).
This didn't solve the problem either.

I mentioned to the last engineer that there were various posts on the Dell forums about this issue and he said he had replaced the motherboard on another laptop (same model) last week for the same issue.

The engineer then spoke with someone on the phone & explained the problem and the fact that there were posts on the forum about it.
He said the person he was speaking to mentioned that there is a BIOS update on the way - he didn't say whether it would solve the fan issue though or when it would be released.

Another user posted that there was an update for the Inspiron range released in the last few weeks which seems to have solved the fan issue on this range so hopefully the forthcoming update is the Studio range version of that update.

So I'll cross my fingers, arms, legs, USB cables & anything else crossable that this forthcoming BIOS update will solve the problem.

I think in future, Dell need to add "Testing in a quiet room" to their test procedures.

Dell phoned me at home today and kindly offered to send an engineer out to swap the MB and heatsink. However, "emsee_uk" reports that their Dell has had the same treatment to a new MB / heatsink but to no avail.  At least Dell are trying to do something. I'm not sure if I want my new 1749 taken apart !!

If Dell have resolvedthe fan issues on other models then I guess a Bios update is not far off (fingers crossed).

I also have this same problem, however if i raise the back of the laptop instead of the fan being on constantly even with core temps of 25 degrees it now only comes on intermitently at arround 45-50 degrees. you cud also try a laptop cooler.

A laptop cooler may help but I think there's something not quite right about spending quite a lot of money on a laptop and then having to buy a 3rd party laptop cooler to prevent the cooling system on the laptop from kicking in!

Great, so now I got a post deleted because I dared say I regret I bought this computer... Whow, really smart censorship.

I experience fan/temperature problems along with other related issues. I'd like to share my opinion. No forum rules have been violated in this post, so please do not censor me again.

With this laptop, the only problem I managed to solve was video and audio freezes through HDMI with constant audio crackling, due to high latency times => resolved by deactivating the ATI powerplay

I still have those problems:

- Fan on and off constantly

-Fan speed and loudeness unusually high (constant rotation at high level after 30 minutes of light activity: internet, mail...)

-Fan sometimes stuck at 100% when resuming from sleep (need reboot)

-Video freezes

-High temperatures

-Audio HDMI output deactivated when resuming from sleep (need reboot)

I reinstalled everything, updated the bios and the drivers to their latest versions (both dell certified, then directly from the constructor website), ran every test I could, deactivated all new technologies: speedstep, powerplay... I also had my motherboard replaced by DELL. NOTHING WORKS !!

This computer has some serious design issues, and DELL have been aweful at dealing with its customers and communicating with them.

Please let me express my opinion, and do not delete this post again. Trying to make your customers shut up is not a good way to meet their expectations.
