touchpad problem vostro 3550

Hi,

I just bought a new vostro 3550 and I've got problems with the touchpad. The mouse cursor moves all over the place, when i unplug the power it works fine!

Will there be a driver update or any other solution for this problem or do I have to send my new laptop back.

thanks.

This solved the problem for me as well. The Touchpad gets slow, gets stuck and only a part of the Touchpad works like the lower left etc. As soon as I use the Fn-F3 or F3 is the function keys are configured differently it starts working fine.Either this is a setting feature or a software problem. Definitely not hardware.

Using Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit

Hi, I just want to post what did work for me.

It was not relevant whether the DC Plug was pluged in or not.

The pad wouldn't let me control the cursor properly sometimes it would jump inconsistently from one point to another or activate zoom/scroll/etc even if I had only one finger on the pad.

The solution for me, vostro 3550 with Win 7 pro 64, was as simple as easy.

1. uninstall the Alps driver in your Control Panel

2. restart

3. download the A03 version of the Alps driver found here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/de/de/dedhs1/DriverDetails?driverId=Y4D3X&fileId=2731101988

4. install and restart. That's it.

Hope it works for you too, 'cause this was driving me nuts.

Hi  zach123,

Welcome to the Community,

Sorry that you're having trouble with the new system.I would suggest you to first update the BIOS and then uninstall and reinstall the Touchpad driver.

Use this link to download and update BIOS : www.dell.com/.../vostro-3550

Note:While updating BIOS the AC adapter should be plugged in to the system, battery should be adequately charged(more than 10%) and all external peripherals(USB devices) should be disconnected from the system.

After updating BIOS uninstall the Touchpad driver. To uninstall go to Device Manager, expand Mouse and pointing device, right click Touchpad, click Uninstall, put check mark for delete driver software, click OK.

Reboot the system, download and reinstall the Touchpad driver from the link below :

www.dell.com/.../vostro-3550

Let me know if you need more help.

Thank You

Stephane FLX if you read this:

Do you have an explanation about exactly what each of the registry entries in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps\Apoint\Tapping] does, and what dword values work?  The reason is that I have the opposite problem on my new Inspiron 17R.  I think Dell tried to fix the original problem by disabling the touchpad whenever the keyboard is used.  On my machine it takes four seconds for the touchpad to re-enable after a keystroke, which is incredibly frustrating.  There is no setting in the latest GUI I can find to change it.  Dell only suggested installing the latest driver (which it already is).  I have already found that my setting in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps\Apoint\Tapping] was "TapTypingDelay"=dword:00000004" and changing the value changes the re-enable delay, but I want to cancel the feature altogether, and I'd like to be clear about what effect the other entries have.  I may try a few more changes or a different driver to see what happens, but it would help if you already have the information.

TIA

Hi Tia,

To disable the touchchec, it is this key : TapTyping

change it to 0, restart alps.

I've stopped searching for drivers or other ways, im using a mouse :(

its less frustrating... my dell laptop is the worst purchase ive ever made. :(

I have a slightly older Inspiron 1750 model with a synaptics touchpad which is fine (once I got rid of dell's version of the driver and control panel and installed the synaptics one).  This Alps one is useless, I've spent hours trying to adjust it and it is still jerky and unresponsive.  I'm returning it and getting a Toshiba. I would advise anyone reading this not to buy any laptop with an Alps touchpad without trying it first to see if you can get on with it.

I wish that I had seen this sooner.  I have been having problems with my Dell laptop since I bought it several years ago.  It has been getting worse lately.  I am to the point that I am going to buy a new computer but I doubt it will be a Dell.  From what I can see, there were many people with the same touchpad problem and they didn't consider a recall or an alert to the community of those who had bought Dell Vostro computers.
