Trouble with XPS 17 and Windows 8 graphics

Using the final release of Windows 8 x 64 from MSDN, I'm having troubles with the graphics drivers. The screen will flicker to black momentarily every now and then. Sometime it may be a minute or two before it starts, then it will flicker a number of times, then it may be half a minute or a couple of minutes and it will do it again. I've tried various drivers all to no avail. I've tried disabling the NVidia GeForce 555M card, but the problem remains: It looks like it is a problem with the intel HD drivers for this configuration.. The screen works fine under Windows 7 x64.

Is this a known problem ? Any workaround/fix or schedule as to when a fix will be available ?

Thanks

Is your fan on a lot of the time?

I checked my Nvidia Control Panel, Manage 3D Settings to ensure that the Intel was the default card (I had to change it back to Intel when I upgraded to Win 8).

But I forgot that Steam starts up minimised on my laptop and Steam is set to use the Nvidia card! So I removed the Steam startup option and now the laptop just uses the Intel graphics for all my desktop apps and the fan does not come on (so much, it still does seem to come on more that Win 7).

Also, there is a fix I found for the screen flicker which worked for me!

I right-clicked the desktop in Windows 8 desktop mode and opened the "graphics properties" (Intel) and seleted the "Power" tab, and then disabled "display refresh switching" in the "on battery" tab in the Power Source.   After disabling it I don't see this issue any more, which is a result as the flicker is very off-putting.

Cheers,

Peter.

The fan works more, but the problema isn't the fan. In Win7, in battery mode, the Dell extended life switch to intel card. On Win8, it doesn't. And I can't change any settings about that. That's the problem, because nvidia uses a lot of power. I don't have to change settings application at a time to do this in Win7. Dell has to solve this, Dell, nvidia ou intel...
