Unmountable_Boot_Volume: Standard fixes not working

I'm getting the Unmountable Boot Volume message during startup of my 2 month old Vostro 1500, running XP. I've run chkdsk /r and fixboot from the Recovery Console, and I've tried to use BIOS to run the system with as few bells and whistles as possible, and also switched back to the default settings (but I really don't understand most of the BIOS choices). Thanks for any help,

Chances are the drive is failing. Power on, press F12, load the Dell diagnostics and do an extended test of the hard drive.

I ran the tests and got the following errors: Error Code 0F00:075D Msg: IDE device failed. The self-test failed the read portion of the test Error Code 0F00:0244 Msg: BLock 6771028: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected Error Code 0F00:1A44 Msg: BLock 6771028: Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected Is the hard drive trashed? Do I need a new one, and what is the likelihood of recovering any data on this one? Thanks in advance,
