Upgrading I8100

Question

I was looking to upgrade my video card (Geforce2 16MB) a few months ago but I was told from Dell and other computer companies that it was not possible to upgrade it because the card is soldered to the motherboard. I've been looking at the past posts and seen several people say they have. Was I told a bunch of junk? If I can upgrade my video card what are some good web sites where I can purchase a video card? I've read people mentioning Dell spare parts where of whit is that? And how do you replace the video card in the I8100

I beleive that the 8100 does have a removable video card, however if you open the case you void the service contract..... Dell spare parts is available through the attached link.

Yes, you can upgrade your video card. I just open my laptop today, the card is under the keyboard.  Remove the keyboard and you can see the card at the center of the computer.

Yes, you can upgrade. Your choices are as follows:

Radeon 7500 64mb (requires a UXGA LCD)
Radeon 9000 64mb
Geforce 4go440 32mb
Geforce 4go440 64mb

I'd probably go for the 4go 64mb, its probably the best all rounder, and has a bit of OC headroom. See any post made by Delltalker johnallg to get part numbers and contact details for Dell spare parts.

It should also be noted that the ATI Radeon 7500 is a card that was sold with the laptop. I have it , and it has been great for me. It will run you about 149 bucks, and will give you a 3dmark score of 3800 aprox. I also don't think dell will give you to hard of a time to get it.

The Geforce 4 cards and the Radeon 9000 were sold with the 8200. They will fit and work in the 8100 but dell doesn't like to sell it if they know you don't have a 8200. Between those cards the 9000 generally gets the best performance just a little bit ahead of the Geforce 4 440 go. But to get any of them to put in a I8100 you will probably have to Ebay or get really lucky with who you talk to in Spar Parts. Your monitor is also very important to think about to. If you have a Hitachi screen it might be more advisable to look at options other then upgradeing. Simply it gives allot of problems with changing video cards.

I looked this up a while back and would of gotten the 9000 if dell woul have sold it. Post on the petition upgrade thread started by the forum moderator. Also if you are going from a 16mb Geforce card even if the Radeon 7500 isn't the best.. it will be a night and day difference.
