Vostro 3500 NVidia ge-force 310m windows 10 driver

I have a dell Vostro 3500 which was released early 2010. The windows 10 upgrade app tells me I cannot upgrade to windows 10 because of the NVidia GeForce 310m driver is not compatible.

I also have an inspiron 1545 released late 2008 this can be upgraded to windows 10.

I have looked into this driver issue as I have been running windows 8.1 on the Vostro 3500 laptop for sometime. However the graphics driver sometimes crashes and has to recover. While this is useable it is not ideal.

In order to run windows 8.1 I had to download and install the old XP 64bit driver and run it in compatibility mode and as administrator. This took some effort and messing about to get it to work as well as it does.

However I have tried to install windows 10 preview on the system it will not let me install at all so I cannot even get to the point where I can try the windows XP driver. When I try to install directly on this system.

However I did install windows 10 preview on a different dell laptop the is compatible and them moved the hard drive into the Vostro 3500 to see what would happen.

Windows 10 worked on the laptop except for the GeForce 310m which had a exclamation mark in device manager. and it too sometimes crashed and had to recover

This is telling me the only thing stopping this laptop running windows 10 is the lack of a dell GeForce 310m driver

Will dell be releasing an updated driver for this graphics card as it seams very unfair that one laptop over a year older than the other can upgrade while the newer higher spec one cannot. Just because DELL cannot be bothered to come up with a new driver for windows 8.1 and windows 10

I'm using Windows 10 since build 10096. Everything is very nice except lack of NVIDIA drivers. Fingerprint reader also not working but that is not a problem for me. Computer is pretty fast and has 8 Gb of RAM, but such a pitty  i have to keep it dualboot machine with Windows 7 in case i want to watch something through HDMI. I wont buy Dells anymore if this problem will not be solved. I have now 13 Dell laptops all bought last few years in my workplace because of my initiative.  This Vostro in my use and makes me change my Dell-religion to HP. For example I have also HP Compaq 8510w at home, from year 2007 and everything is working under Windows 10.

Small update on windows 10. the driver is installed and works to a degree. It sometimes stops working and has to restart. the System does not crash the display just goes blank for a second then restarts.

It also will not play avi files very well they jump and jitter.

So even though it is possible to get windows 10 on the system, we are still in the same situation as we were with windows 8.1. The graphics card is still causing a significant problem.

So come on Dell give us all something to cheer about and release a driver that's works with windows 10.

PLEASE...

after installing windows 10 using Media creation tool to download Windows 10

windows worked for a while before i started having some problems with the graphics ,after trying to fix the problem without any success i reverted  back to windows 7 but remembered something when i was installing the nvidia driver about modifying a nvidia driver inf file to make it work , so i did it on win 7 and was wondering if it works on win 10 , so if anyone can test it and see if works it will help us all .

install the intel hd driver R287485.exe and IDT (audio) R256074.exe with win7 compatability

download this driver from nvidia

www.geforce.com/.../42588

extract the file after it finishes downloading and then look for a file called nvdm.inf in the display.driver folder and then replace it with the file below that i modified according to a video on youtube by changing some addresses and adding the device id to the list (it only works up to version 296.10 or so i heard)

www.mediafire.com/.../nvdm.inf

now run the setup file and it is supposed to run , run with win7 compatability to be sure.

if it works send me some virtual cookies if not no sweat , dell support still ***.

so far they have never helped me solve any problems and they lie in their official documentation!

it is mentioned that in the bios we could switch off the intel hd and use only the geforce one , also the wireless card is supposed to connect to higher speed wifi (5 ghz) but it can't see them because they installed one with lower specs(2.4 ghz) and they stop supporting "older models" and leave their users waiting for an update without any use. i'm officially done with DELL and i will never buy any device from them in the future and encourage everyone i see to do the same .

Hi everyone,

I did follow the above instructions from Sonicmanx and after a bit of messing around, my Dell Vostro 3500 is NOW running Windows 10; a big Thanks is needed here.  I did first delete the Nvidia drivers and replaced it with Intel HD drivers.

It took about 4 hours of downloading and updating ( forever with 8 restarts ).

Be sure to download and build the Media onto a large USB Flash Drive.

I need to update Acronis and Kaspersky  and that should be it.

Cheers

Thanks, it works.

Only Bluetooth was missing.

More difficult is avoid the deactivation from the old driver by Windows update.

After the deactivation I have reinstalled the driver and have a black screen.

After some trials it was ok again, but due risk I preferred reverse to W7.

It's remain working on yours?

Thanks.

Oi amigo, a saida HDMI só funciona com o driver da Nvídia original da Dell.

Se não conseguir instalar esse driver não terá saida HMDI.

Os passos abaixo resolveram o meu problema:

1 - instale o windows 10 e atualize via windows update

2 - desative a placa nvidia no gerenciamento de dispositivos - deixe ela down

3 - baixe o driver - nVidia Geforce 310M-Switchable, v.189.99, A02 para Windows 7 64bits - R289134.exe no site de suporte da Delll:

downloads.dell.com/.../R289134.exe

Rode a instalação e ao final ative a placa.

4 - reinicie e configure todos os perfis de gerenciamento de energia para o melhor desempenho.

obs - caso a tela fique preta, desligue o notebook pelo botão de ligar. ligue normalmente e aguarde.

Para mim resolveu.

Hi "sonicmanx"!  Great help with your post about how to do this.  I haven't moved to Windows 10 yet, but am planning to.  So, before going ahead, I wanted to ask you if you are happy with your Windows 10 on your Vostro 3500?  Have you faced any other issues since upgrading?

Dell, obviously, doesn't care in supporting our system and releasing an updated driver!

Your response would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Vannila

Yes I am happy with the way the system runs. the only small issue is once in a while the NVidia driver stops workings and the screen resets itself and carries on as usual. However its not really a problem as it sorts itself out.

To be fair to Dell they are not the only one who is not supporting laptops with the Gforce 310M graphics

I have come across HP, Sony and Acer with this card and none of them are offering updated drivers either.

Nvidia don't want to know as they washed their hands once they handed over the cards to Dell, Hp etc.

Hope all goes well for you, if you follow the instructions you should be able to do it.

Best regards

Sonicmanx

Hi Sonicmanx,

Thanks a lot for your input!  Great to know that things are going well for you after the upgrade.  Even with Windows 7, I have been having the occasional "display driver stops working" problem all these years. And then, it recovers by itself giving the message "The driver has since recovered".  But yeah, this is not an annoying problem.

Will post back after my upgrade sometime in the next several weeks, when I muster up the courage to finally go ahead! :)
