XPS 13 screen flickers when waking up after Windows 10 upgrade

Whenever i turn on the laptop, or wake the screen up when it goes dark, the screen starts to flicker. It's like it's glitching a couple of seconds before it stops.. It goes on for about 5-10 seconds. It started to happen after i upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday (i got my XPS 13 yesterday). It's the i7 model with the infinity touch display.

I have checked that i have all the latest drivers. So is this software, or hardware? And what can i do to fix this?

Hi Guys,

does anyone use the Displaylink 4-in-1 adapter?

Mine was working yesterday with the previous driver, but with 4300 which fixes the flicker after sleep it's no longer working.

Same issue with my DELL D3100 docking station. I've tried also to update DisplayLink drivers, but no way to solve this problem. Seems that with the latest drivers installed the external monitors are not recognized while connected to the DisplayLink products. Other functionalities i.e. networking, USB connections and audio features are working quite well. Because the multi-displaying is crucial for me the unique solution was to roll back the video card driver to the previous version.

To survive the flickering, while waiting for new driver release I can suggest you also an other work-around to stop flickering. As, I suppose, you are working in multi-screen mode so you can set a non-native resolution on the notebook display, i.e. FHD, so after exiting the sleep mode you'll be able to change the scaling mode from "Scale full screen" to "Center image" from the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and then return all the settings backwards. This will stop flickering until next sleep.

I confirm that the new Driver fixed the problem for me too. Thank you for the support HeikoMa. I even uninstalled the chipset driver as I understand that it was a downgrade from the available driver from Windows update.

Hi Ravi BC @ Dell

Now the cause of the problem is known (in the fix for Intel HD5500 Driver: 20.19.15.4300) how long till the fix is reverse engineer to older machines like the L321x and Intel 3000 display please?

I know it will need to be scheduled/planned but there me an idea of when that might me?  Thanks in advance, Peter

Hi Ravi @ Dell,

Second to the message from PeterWBaker, could you confirm that you/Dell/Intel are still working on the issue for the XPS 13 (L321x) with the Intel HD-3000 integrated video controller?   Peter and I, together with many XPS owners (with the HD-3000 integrated video controller are still patiently waiting for the fix.

Many thanks.

My Dell XPS 13 started this flickering problem again.  Looked at the website and I see that a newer driver was loaded that Dell recommends for the computer (computer: 10.18.15.4256 Dell: 10.18.15.4240). Lets all thank Microsoft for automatic updates. Does Dell talk to MS? Will return the computer to the older driver and see if flickering goes away.

Vinniec, you need to download the new HD5500 driver 20.19.15.4300, read prior posts for instructions how to do this. Make sure your automatic updates are ON or else your computer will not upload/find this new driver from/on the internet.

Hi Joe,

Can you try downloading the latest DisplayLink driver to see if that fixes your issue?

Ravi, BC @ Dell,

I cannot help myself start to worry that the flickering issue for the older Dell XPS with the 3000 integrated video controller does NOT have a fix?   I sent in my "request for confirmation" 10 days ago just asking for a status update.  I have not seen a response from Dell if a fix is being worked by Dell/Intel?  Could you kindly provide an update to ease our worry please.  If not, should you go back to the Windows 7 to resolve the flickering problem.  Your guidance please?

Ravi, BC @ Dell,

Per my repeated query on the flickering problem on my XPS 13 - L321X with Windows 10 installed, I need your guidance here please!  Should I go back to Windows7?  Per Microsoft, I have 1 mo to go back to Windows 7.  I am running out of time (just a few days left) before I can opt back to Windows 7.  I could not help feeling frustrated NOT getting any inputs from the maker of my Dell XPS 13 - L321x laptop when Dell said that it is tested to be compatible to the Windows 10 before I went ahead to update it.  Please help.

I just updated my Dell XPS 13 with Intel HD Graphics 5500 version 20.19.15.4300 and have not seen the flicker problem (closed & open, sleep computer several times with no problems when I woke it up like before).

The update is on Dells support website.

Hopefully this finally solves the problem. Dell's support for this problem was definitely lacking.
