XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

I see... they are cutting costs in the RAM as well.... will have to check what is currently installed in mine.

The one that I was late for was the SSD, got the LiteOn instead of the Samsung... shame

JONSTRONG: I agree pretty much with you. I don't know anyone else who owns this laptop, and as usual, in the forums there are much more people ranting than praising. My experiencie so far is pretty bad, maybe as you said there are tons of positive experiencies that we don't know of. Anyway, I use (well, used) this laptop for off work jobs (software development), so being 3 weeks without it is really getting on me. TBH, it is a really good machine........ when it works.

Gonzo: Yes, that's probably what I will have to do. I wasn't planning on reusing the disk (bought a msata adapter and extracted all data), so I was willing not having to open it and use it pristine. BTW, why did you swap the memory modules?

I haven't given up yet. New MB to be installed next week.

Further to notes earlier in this thread, I've asked one of the updated motherboards be supplied rather than the old ones. We'll see what's sent...

They have no updated board and it will be a second hand one.

Dell XPS 9530 4202HQ bought december 2013. Extremely noisy. Two motherboard changes around october 2014, and exchange for a 4212HQ system december 2014, problem persisted.

Motherboard exchange May 2015, for a refurbished 4202HQ board BIOS A007, yellow stickers said REV A00.

System finally, finally silent, even with SpeedStep on.

edit: And I mean silent . I have good hearing, and I work in a quiet environment. I used to hear two noises: the first was like a little banshee wail when scrolling, etc. The other was like a gas leak that intermittently spat liquid. Speedstep off and forced C states 0 eliminated the banshee, but not the sputter. This MB eliminated both.

Thanks wanderlost. I'll compare your post details with the parts delivered and report back on parts and noise after the replacement.

it isn't fit for purpose, so long as you never back down they give in eventually. helps if you paid by credit card as you threaten to involve them as well.

Hello,

I have an M3800 bought in April 2015 with exactly the same whine/wail issue documented in this forum when running fully charged on mains power.

I have tried all combinations of wifi on/off, varying screen brightness and keyboard backlight intensity with zero effect.

Before purchasing I read on several forums than this issue had been resolved, so I was surprised that mine was still affected. Nevertheless I recently had a Dell technician replace the motherboard and d/c input to no avail - the noise persists. At Dell's request I am sending the laptop back to them for 'testing at the depot.' I will report back on the results of this.

The other option I was given was to have another on-site tech visit and essentially replace everything that is left on the machine. They said that if that didnt work they would need to take it into the depot.

It seems that all roads lead to the depot.

Has anyone had any luck with returning the machine? I don't want them to say it is within acceptable limits and close my case.

Has there been any success with refunds from Dell?

well you are going to get conned as they will say it is within acceptable limits or within tolerance. Basically this is so they get to worm out of it without trying to fix it.

Good luck.

I have bought Dell XPS 13 last week and found that it makes a loud noise while connected to power. It works fine while its not connected to power . Is this a expected behaviour from Dell XPS's laptops? Any idea plz?

XPS laptops have this fault (not all though). Dell is not actively working on a fix (it's more than 2 years since the issue was reported).

So best is to return it and buy other brand.

So after following this thread for a year anxiously awaiting news of a fix to the coil whine, I've lost confidence this is going to happen. Also I have learned from this who I will and will not buy a laptop from in the future based on the way things seemed to be handled from what I've read here. I'm finally giving up and unsubscribing. Hope those with issues find a resolution.

Well I agree with you completely, although I have only had mine for several months.

Dell have sent multiple replacement motherboards, but this is the odd thing. They are always the same: Rev 1.0 (A00)
2014-10-07

And I asked tech support for a newer revision with the supposed fix, and they confirmed that these do exist, yet they are refusing to send me one saying that they reserve these for in-depot repairs only. Now, I do not want to send my laptop in for a multitude of reasons including my need for it everyday for work.

Dell - please stop giving the default reaction to this issue, and actually apply some investigative and technical rigour. I cannot image how much money they are spending on all of these pointless 'fixes' and parts.
