XPS 15 9530 - Noise problem?

Hi all,

I just got my new XPS 15, amazing laptop but there's 1 big problem,

A high-pitched scratching/screeching noise is produced from the power button area ONLY when the power is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

I've seen other forums and others have exactly the same problem, Any ideas?

I found this example http://z.mk/e6vq , the power is plugged into the laptop at 6 seconds.

Thanks

Dear All,

Finally mine solved today, no more noise, no more coil whining sound, finally I have peace on this beautiful working station, I can finally call it a beauty now.

I got a new motherboard which on packaging sticker showing manufactured on August 10, below screen shot is highlighted model number from this service. The last 2 times I got the refurbished motherboard with part number "T37HN", this time I got "R99XN" and the problem of the coil whining problem finally gone.

carlieseah, that's excellent news. :-)

Following your post I contacted my Dell support representative who has advised the new part was available. I asked about the part number and revision and it was confirmed a later version and the part number is R99XN, matching the previous post by you.

Now to wait for a installation date... I will advise on progress but I'm hoping for a similar result (finally).

Contacting Dell support should do this.

My new motherboard is scheduled for installation Monday (it's Friday today). I'll report back on status then.

Finally I have a quiet machine!!! :-)

Motherboard replacement occurred today.

Installed was Rev 0 of new part number OR99XN. Old motherboard part number was OTWG2W.

There is a TINY noise if I put my ear up to the unit when running on power, but this is seriously nothing and is easily covered within what I would easily describe as a normal electrical noise. I have listened very hard because this has been such a long and drawn out issue.

I'll continue listening for odd noises but so far, so good.

Hi Captain_Colossus,

Great to hear that, yes here is a very very tiny electrical noise only when I'm stick my ear / face to the palm rest and its nothing compare to previous motherboard making. I'm glad that I'm not the only one with have this fixed with the new batch of motherboard of R99XN ^^.

Let us enjoy the brand new day with excellent performance, stunning looking and quiet Laptop, Cheers~

Have a good day onward~

Hi Charlieseah,

How's your new motherboard going?

Mine is still a lot quieter although I can still hear noise from it. I'm not sure if I am now oversensitive to this.

The noise I hear is much more like regular electrical noise, similar to that I can hear from a device in my home theatre set up.

Presently, I describe this as within an acceptable range.

Dear Captain Colossus,

Thanks for the follow up, so far mine laptop are sure quiet than when I get it as new and also the 3x replacement of the motherboard, some more I use a small cooler (www.moshi.com/peripheral-cooling-fan-zefyr-2-macbook) now and the "noise" are barely noticeable.

Best Regards,

Charlie Seah

Of course you can return it as it is defective, you have the law on your side.

"I understand that you would like to return the item, However i would like to inform you that this is a business outlet order. As per dell policies business customers do not have return policy."

They want me to go through tech support for a repair which would be ok if this wasn't a 20-month old issue with a 12-month old fix. They knew it was defective when they sold it because it's a design flaw that's been identified, they're just dumping the stock through the outlet.

They've won because I really can't be bothered wasting any more time on it, I've already ordered an alternative and allocated the XPS to someone working in a noisy environment where it won't be noticed.

I've also banned any future Dell purchases. Dell won't care, we don't buy enough but it makes me feel better.

I found this thread because I've just taken delivery of an XPS-15 laptop with this problem.

I've been told that I can't return it because I bought it through the Business Outlet channel, it seems Dell is shifting the defective stock as 'certified refurbished' through a sales channel where customers have no ability to reject the goods.

Nice one dell, that's how you lose 15+ year loyal customers.

Latest answer from dell support (over the phone) about the issue:

It is by design, it's not a fault. Designers used components that produce such noise and it is normal.

Buying Lenovo Thinkpad T series again next year. That's best solution for this dell problem.

Ask for that in writing as evidence in your court case to claim back the full amount.

I have this dreaded problem too, and the Advanced Resolution Group and tech support have not been able to resolve it after at least 3 attempts. What do you suggest as a next step? It truly is unusable and unsalable.
