XPS 15 Touch BSOD on startup

Hi,

I just received a new XPS 15 Touch two days ago and am encountering BSOD on startup from rest.  I receive an error message saying "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart... IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL".

When I look at my blue screen notifications, it says "The NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M driver (C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nlvddmkm.sys) appears to have caused a system crash.

I have tried updating this driver but I still get the problem.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Just bummed my brand new laptop is encountering this problem.

Thank you!

Hi FatFreePopcorn,

since the problem is BLATENTLY reported by the system in notifications as the driver file. I want you to complete a clean, manual installation by following theses steps:

Locate the current driver for your touchpad from  Dell Support by entering your service tag number here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/ShowProductSelector?fkey=Drivers_PS

SAVE the download to somewhere convenient like your desktop (you can put it somewhere else later)

1) From the control panel under Programs / Uninstall a Program locate the NVIDIA Device Driver and completely uninstall the software.  but DO NOT RESTART if prompted. Instead select the restart later option.

2) From the control panel under Hardware and Sound locate the Device Manager in the Devices and Printers category and click on it (device manager may require admin permission.)

3) Locate Display adapters and click to expand. You may see the NVIDIA module still there. If so right click and select Uninstall. okay the warnings. when prompted to restart use the TAB key on your keyboard to highlight the restart option and then press the Enter Key on keyboard.

**After you have restarted, the display  will operate with limited functionality, without resolution and  preference settings. THATS PERFECT for now.

4) Restart computer as in step 3

5) Windows will automatically "discover" new hardware and install it for Generic Display Adapter on port …etc so the display isis back to it's limited state. THATS what we want!

6) Double click on your downloaded NVIDIA Dell display adapter driver and install.

IMPORTANT NOTE: if your driver does not launch immediately after expanding locate the "setup.exe" This will be located in C:Dell / Drivers / (5 digit alpha numeric identifier of your software) / setup.exe. Restart normally if prompted. That's it!

HERE"S WHY:

Whenever a SP or major upgrade to Windows is conducted the original operating system is fundamentally changed. One would hope driver support for the upgrade or SP would be automatic and in most cases it IS either automatic or available as an update. You should always use your My Dell program utility as your FIRST resource for updates to Dell products. Microsoft Windows Update only offers security and system-critical  driver updates and usually only when the original manufacturer has stopped supporting a product.

The device driver (Dell device driver in this case) Installs to it's operating system and system configuration...which is why one driver works on multiple  configurations. This procedure allows the driver install package a "fresh look" at the OS and system so in most cases resolves driver problems when the drivers aren't rendered completely obsolete by an update.   If this solution resolves your touchpad issue please drop a quick note. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks and Good Luck!

If this solved your display BSOD issue, please remember to click the YES button and if you need further assistance don't hesitate to contact.

Hi FatFreePopcorn,

You may find more system specific info for your XPS at the Owners forum but in the meantime can you provide any of the following details.

-When did the problem start...particularly, did it coincide with any specific event like a windows update or a driver update (I see you updated driver, just not when.)

-Any steps you have taken to correct this problem up to now.

Without having these details I would start by repairing the Master Boot Record. It's relatively safe and only requires a few step as follows:

  • Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt
  • Type BOOTREC
  • Once in bootrec type FIXMBR

You will get a notification when FixMBR is complete ... Then, reboot your computer.

If this answer was helpful please remember to hit the YES button. If you need further assistance please don't hesitate to contact.

Hi N7U!

Thank you so much for responding!  It appears that the Owners forum was closed prior to the release of my laptop but I will continue to browse there to see if I stumble upon anything.

In response to your questions, the problem started the very first day I received the laptop (3 days ago).  And just to clarify, I only receive BSOD error upon booting my computer when it hasn't been used for awhile, but then it restarts fine after the BSOD error.

As for steps I have taken to fix it, I do not want to do more harm than good so I've mainly been doing diagnostics.  As mentioned previously, MyDell's blue screen notification center tells me that "The NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M driver (C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nlvddmkm.sys) appears to have caused a system crash."  I also downloaded BlueScreenView, which told me the error appears to be coming from ntoskrnl.exe.

Not sure what to do from here though.

I completed your FixMBR instructions as well.

And just for further info:

OS: Windows 8.1

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4702HQ CPU @2.20GHz

Memory: 16.00 GB

Hard Drive: Western Digital 1 TB with Crucial 32 GB SSD

Thank you again for responding.  Any further help would be much appreciated!

I have a similar problem or maybe the same? My BlueScreen shows an error message like: a driver is mismanaging PTES

My system is an Inspiron 17" (touch) with the same GPU. If I start my system after it was in sleep mode, the BSOD appears.

I tried different nvidia drivers (old versions, current release) and the problem wasn't gone.

I found a link to a different problem but its worth a try (not tested yet): http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f299/solved-bsod-x64-vista-a-driver-is-mismanaging-ptes-2-nvidia-cards-234486.html

My next test will be with nvidia beta driver...

The mention of Updates and service packs takes into account that if the setting for windows update is "install updates automatically" per recommended settings, that can present the same problem...BUT you should continue to use recommended settings...they're for your security.

Before you test the NVIDIA beta driver be aware it may not install properly because it does not have a DELL Driver Signature. It may work but  before hand please attempt the following procedure to get a clean installation of both driver and hardware, per my reply to previous post.

My problems are solved (the first day after).

What did I do?

1) Completely removed ALL VGA drivers (Intel, nvidia and amd (because it was an option :))) (used http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/) -> in safe mode (one by one, with auto-reboot option....)
2) Clean install of current Intel VGA driver (not from dell support page, used drivers from intel because they are more recent)
3) Reboot
4) Clean install of nvidia beta driver
5) Reboot
6) Sleep mode
7) Wake up
8) Blue screen :( (before login screen was shown)

Above steps didn't fix my problem and I don't know exactly which step of the following solved my problem:

9) set the registry key as described (http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f299/solved-bsod-x64-vista-a-driver-is-mismanaging-ptes-2-nvidia-cards-234486.html)
10) Reboot
11) Sleep Mode
12) Wake up
13) Blue Screen :( (I saw the login screen)

14) Reset registry keys (to original values)
15) Reboot

9) Removed card-reader driver
10) Removed ethernet driver
11) Reboot
12) Clean install of card-reader driver
13) Reboot
14) Sleep mode
15) Wake up
16) NO Blue screen !

17) Clean install of ethernet driver
18) Reboot
19) Sleep mode
20) Wake up
21) NO Blue screen !!

I had a black screen during step 20/21 for some millis, after wake-up, on login screen (this happens sometimes, but I think it's usual).

I've still the nvidia beta drivers and won't uninstall it because my system seems to be stable.

I think that the problem was a driver problem between card-reader and/or ethernet and vga and steps 9 to 15 were useless.

Hello N7U,

Sorry for the delay in responding, I have had a very busy weekend.

So after following you steps I still encountered BSOD once or twice after installing the new drive but have since not received any errors at all.  I am confident the issue is fixed, at least for now.

Thank you very much for you assistance.  It was very helpful (and much faster than the Dell contact I was emailing).
