Yes, they can use the same motherboard.

Here is a review of the XPS which states that the Northwood was originally in the XPS.

I was just reading through that article and got a chuckle when I read, "A cooling fan occasionally kicks in, but isn't noisy enough to be annoying"

LOL, definitely not the case when you have a pressy (Prescott) in your laptop.

Brief question to you guys...
 
How much slower is a 3,2Ghz Northwood in comparison to the Prescott (given that the Prescott runs as it should)?

Read the article I mentioned right above your post.  The short answer is that it is slower in some apps and faster in others.

I have been having the same problems as everyone here. I've been struggling with the performance for over 9 months now. Thanks for everyone's help here, it's been real helpfull.

When I have Rightmark CPU Clock running any CPU intensive application drives the throttle down to 445.50 MHz!

I've been getting the same run around from dell "tech support". They have agreed to send it to the "depot". But I fear they won't find anything wrong.

Thanks again for all the info, it's really helped me prepare for the tech support that is dell.

So i called dell and they told me that the answer was to add more memory 1 gb to be precisce i refused this and they want to take it into test it. Is there any news of a much needed recall or even a serious look into the problem. If not my lawer will be back in town soon. So i reckon i'll have to drop him a line...........its a shame because i really dont like lawsuits....but if i must i must.

I have 1 GB of ram and that does not solve the problem. The problem is with the poorly designed heat dissipation with the prescott cpu. I would like to know the percentage of gen1 XPS have this overheating problem. Games and DVDs run faster on my 1GHz computer that is 4 years old!

I would sugest getting the Rightmark CPU clock utility. It has the best "proof" that the cpu is crapping out. The utility says that my gen 1 xps throttles down to 445MHz under heavy load. I wonder what others here get under heavy load.

I'm going to get some kind of agreement that they will swap out the cpu before I send it in for "diagnostics". Every diagnostic I run comes back passed, so if they don't test for cpu throttle they won't find anything wrong. I'd hate to have to keep sending it back because they are incompetent. I have yet to find or talk to anyone who knows what they are doing and not reading off a script.

Let me know what your lawyer says when he gets back into town. I bet there a bunch of people out there who haven't found this forum who would love to join in.

I received an email from the attorney who I had contacted, that was posted here as well as in another thread, stating that while they were not saying our case did not have merit, they would not be able to represent us at this time. Until now, I was inclined to not post this information, as I didn't want Dell laughing at us. They are already bad enough.
 
Kevon, how are things coming along on your end?
 
Anyway, I will be picking my laptop tomorrw from its visit to the Depot, and will let you know what they did to it. Yippee, I can't wait.

My problem sadly is a two-layered one. Not only do I have an overheating machine, but I have an uncooperative "host", if you will. I live in Puerto Rico and Dell Latinamerica is being a pain about servicing my laptop. Their stance is that its costing them a lot to import the parts of my system and that my system needs specialized support from the XPS group. Yesterday I did just that (called Del Latinamerica), and they forwarded me to the XPS Support group. I was an hour with one of the technicians (he was really cool about everything) and after an hour of troubleshooting the system, he says the machine needs a new processor, motherboard and RAM.

I requested the northwood processor, but he said he needed to ask his supervisor about that.

I suspect that moderators/Dell technicians read this board from time to time. I would like to request from them a certification that Dell Latinamerica has to provide support for my system here in Puerto Rico (the way they have been doing it in the past). I will try and find out an e-mail address for you to send it in. It is certainly not fair to buy a three-year warranty and such a high-end system and go unsupported in the region just because they don't distribute it.

I hope someone can help me.

A replacement CPU type = unknown 3400 MH (4.25 x 800). CPUID Name = Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40GH Revision of41h (know idea, but it doesn't say Prescott anywhere).

I plan to run Everquest as well in just a minute, since that is a more CPU intensive game so I will keep you posted with that data as well. So far the numbers don't look good. I remember being told on this forum that the processor should never throttle below 2700. Is that right? Can't wait to see what Everquest runs at.

Shouldn't it NEVER throttle, unless you're inside a volcano. What's the point of having a 3.4 ghz processor that sometimes runs at it's actual speed.

Sad huh. I'm really upset having to lose productivity to send this laptop into the depot, just to have it returned and it still throttle....

That realy bums be out. I've started persuading my clients and customers not to buy dells. I just tell them some of the nightmare stories I've gone through as a computer consultant. They will never buy dells.

They used to be decent and cheap computers with ok tech support. With the outsourcing to india in the last year or two, they have gone right down the tubes and are the worst tech support I have to deal with. Yes, even worse than AOL.

Your laptop shouldn't ever throttle under "reasonable" conditions in my opinion anyways.  When my Prescott was throttling to about the same values that jmh711 is seeing I saw major lag in all the games I was playing.  jmh711, I would say that it is time to call Dell back and tell them that it is not fixed.  Are you noticing lag in games?  Can you run 3DMark05 and post what score you get?  I think that if Dell refuses to put a Northwood in your laptop and they cannot fix it then they owe you a new laptop soon.

Sure, I'm sorry. I hadn't really been running that program. I will now. The lag was minimal, and not long and drawn out instances, but more crisp choppy instance. Will run that program and get back to you all. Thanks so much, once again! You rule!
