xps m140 battery problems

Should the ac adapter power up the laptop with out the battery, or does the battery have to show charge?

Unless something else is wrong, the system will power up with no battery.

ok then what else could be the problem, because the ac adapter will not power up the laptop.

If the LED on the AC adapter will not come on before you plug in the notebook end, replace the adapter - it's faulty. If the LED is on, reseat the RAM in the system; if it still won't power up, the mainboard is faulty.
